Bichitra is a defunct weekly literary magazine. [1] [2] It was owned by the Government of Bangladesh and edited by Shahadat Chowdhury. [3] [4] The magazine has been described as a historic milestone and a pioneering magazine. [5] [6]

History

Fazal Shahabuddin is the founding editor of the magazine. [7] It was founded in 1972. [8] Bichitra was the first publication in Bangladesh to issue a special Eid edition. [9] Ziaur Rahman talked about his role in the Bangladesh Liberation war and the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in an article in the magazine in 1972. [10] [11] On 17 May 1978, the Tokai, by Rafiqun Nabi, was first published in the magazine. The cartoon would go on to achieve iconic status in Bangladesh. [12]

On 7 December 1991, Sufia Kamal gave an interview to the magazine about her memories of Bangladesh Liberation war. [13] The executive editor, Shahriar Kabir, was fired by the magazine for his involvement in Gono Adalat. [14] Shahadat Chowdhury served as the editor of the magazine until 1997. [15] [16] The government stopped publication of the magazine in 1997. [17]

Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist. A prolific writer, Rahman produced more than sixty books of poetry collection and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature from the latter half of the 20th century. He was regarded as the unofficial poet laureate of Bangladesh. Major themes in his poetry and writings include liberal humanism, human relations, romanticised rebellion of youth, the emergence of and consequent events in Bangladesh, and opposition to religious fundamentalism.

Khaled Mosharraf, Bir Uttom was a Bangladeshi military officer known for his role in the Bangladesh Liberation War. Khaled was the Sector Commander of Bangladesh Forces Sector 2, leader of the Crack Platoon and K Force (Bangladesh) Brigade Commander during the Bangladesh War of Independence. He fought heroically for Bangladesh's independence and was wounded in front line combat against the Pakistan Army. Under his command K-Force played a crucial role in the unconditional surrender of the Pakistani Army on 16 December 1971. On 23 October, while commanding an operation of the K-Force, Khaled Mosharraf was gravely wounded by enemy fire and required a long period of recovery. Although he suffered a bullet injury, he recovered and remained in command of Bangladesh Forces Sector 2. He is best known as an exceptional combatant who had planned and carried out guerrilla warfare from deep within the jungles of Melaghar. More than thirty five thousand guerilla fighters fought under Khaled's command in sector 2.

The Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal is a national trade union federation in Bangladesh and an affiliate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. It is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. Anwar Hossain is the president of Jatyatabadi Sramik Dal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1971 killing of Bengali intellectuals</span> War crime by the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1972

In 1971, the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, most notably the extreme right wing militia group Al-Badr, engaged in the systematic execution of Bengali intellectuals during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Bengali intellectuals were abducted, tortured and killed during the entire duration of the war as part of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. However, the largest number of systematic executions took place on 25 March and 14 December 1971, two dates that bookend the conflict. 14 December is commemorated in Bangladesh as Martyred Intellectuals Day.

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was the radio broadcasting centre of Bengali nationalist forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. This station played an important role in the liberation struggle, broadcasting the Declaration of Independence and increasing the morale of Bangladeshis during the war. In 1971, radio was the only media reaching to the far ends of Bangladesh. The station ran a propaganda campaign throughout the war. Mr Sufi barkat-e-khoda was one of the personalities of the show.

Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician, minister and six-term member of Jatiya Sangsad and member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee, who served as the adviser of parliamentary affairs to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in from 2001 to 2006. On 1 October 2013 he was convicted of 9 of 23 charges and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh for crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence. He was put to death by hanging in Dhaka on 22 November 2015.

<i>The Bangladesh Times</i>

The Bangladesh Times is a now defunct English-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh. It was published by the Bangladesh Times Trustee Board which was chaired by Obaidul Haque. Mahbub Anam served as Editor of the Magazine.

Since the independence of Bangladesh, the presidential election process has been changed several times due to both the Presidential and Parliamentary arrangements. According to the Second Schedule to the Constitution of 1972, the president of the parliament used to be elected by a secret vote. Later, according to the fourth amendment to the constitution, the provision of the direct election system of presidential election was introduced. But soon after 12th Amendment to the Constitution, the provision of presidential elections through an indirect election was introduced after the parliamentary system was installed. At present, President is elected by an indirect election by the members of parliament as per Article 48 of the Constitution.

Shahadat Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi journalist and editor of several news magazines. He served as the editor of Weekly Bichitra from 1972 until its publication was ceased in 1997. He then served as the editor of Shaptahik 2000 and Anandadhara.

Central Depository Bangladesh Limited is a Bangladesh government regulatory agency that records and facilates the trade of securities in Bangladesh. It is the National Numbering Agency for International Securities Identification Number in Bangladesh and member of the Association of National Numbering Agencies. Sheikh Kabir Hossain is chairman of the board of directors. It is Bangladesh's only securities depository enterprise.

Mohsin Uddin Ahmed was a Brigadier General of the Bangladesh Army and recipient of Bir Bikrom, the third highest gallantry award of Bangladesh, for his actions during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was the senior most official of Bangladesh Army executed for the assassination of Ziaur Rahman.

Anwar Ul Alam Shaheed was a Colonel of the Bangladesh Army, secretary in the ministry of foreign affairs, diplomat, and ambassador of Bangladesh to Span and Bahrain. He had served in the Kaderia Bahini and Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini.
