The Big Sandy Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The line runs from Catlettsburg south to Elkhorn City [1] along a former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway line. [2] [3]
At its north end, the Big Sandy Subdivision junctions with the Kanawha Subdivision, which heads east to West Virginia and Virginia and northwest to Ohio. The line continues from the south end as the Kingsport Subdivision; this was the historic change between the C&O and Clinchfield Railroad. The Capital Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. The line runs from near Baltimore, Maryland, southwest to Washington, D.C., along the former Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road (B&O) Washington Branch. The subdivision's Alexandria Extension provides a connection to Virginia and points south.
The Richmond and Alleghany Railroad was built along the James River along the route of the James River and Kanawha Canal from Richmond on the Fall Line at the head of navigation to a point west of Lynchburg near Buchanan, Virginia, and combined with the Buchanan and Clifton Forge Railway Company to reach Clifton Forge, Virginia.
The Kingsport Subdivision is a 133.2-mile railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. It was formerly part of the Huntington West Division. It became part of the CSX Florence Division on June 20, 2016. Running from Elkhorn City, Kentucky, south to Erwin, Tennessee, it forms the north half of the former Clinchfield Railroad; the south half, from Erwin to Spartanburg, South Carolina, is now the Blue Ridge Subdivision. From Elkhorn City, the line continues north as the Big Sandy Subdivision to Catlettsburg, Kentucky, on the Ohio River; trains can then continue to Ohio and other Midwest points. From Spartanburg, trains can continue to Georgia, Florida, or other Southeast states.
The Cumberland Valley Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by the CSX Railroad in the U.S. states of Kentucky and Virginia. The line runs from Corbin, Kentucky, east to Big Stone Gap, Virginia, along a former Louisville and Nashville Railroad line.
The Mountain Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Maryland and West Virginia. The line runs from Cumberland, Maryland, west to Grafton, West Virginia, along the original Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) main line. It was known as the West End Subdivision until the B&O's absorption into the Chessie System, and included the B&O's original crossing of the Allegheny Mountains. Through CSX traffic to the west from Cumberland now uses the Keystone Subdivision over Sand Patch Grade.
The Middle Creek Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It was formerly part of the Huntington West Division. It became part of the CSX Florence Division on June 20, 2016. It splits from the Big Sandy Subdivision at Prestonsburg and runs southwest to a dead end at David for a total of 10.1 miles (16.3 km). CSX filed to abandon all but the first mile (2 km) at Prestonsburg in 2004; it had not seen traffic since the early 1990s. However, due to complications regarding possible rail banking and its effect on the Middle Creek National Battlefield, the line has not yet been abandoned as of 2006. The line is now abandoned, and has been purchased by the city of Prestonsburg, Kentucky. The tracks are now gone and it is currently being converted into a trail.
The Ohio River Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The line runs from Wheeling southwesterly along the east (left) shore of the Ohio River to Huntington along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line.
The Columbus Line Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Ohio. The line runs from Galion south to Columbus along a former New York Central Railroad line.
The Bridgeport Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The line runs from Grafton west to Clarksburg along a former Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road line. At its east end, the Bridgeport Subdivision becomes the Mountain Subdivision; its west end is at the Short Line Subdivision.
The Indianapolis Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Ohio and Indiana. The line runs from Hamilton, Ohio, west to Indianapolis, Indiana, along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line.
The Fairmont Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The line runs from Grafton northwest to Rivesville along the old Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road main line and a former branch of it.
The Short Line Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The line runs from Clarksburg west to New Martinsville along a former Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road line. Its east end is at the west end of the Bridgeport Subdivision; its west end is at the Ohio River Subdivision.
The Marietta Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation and operated by Belpre Industrial Parkersburg Railroad in the U.S. states of West Virginia and Ohio. The line runs from Parkersburg, West Virginia, west to Belpre, Ohio, and north via Marietta to Relief along a former Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road line. Its south end is at a connection to the Ohio River Subdivision; the line crosses the Ohio River on the Parkersburg Bridge between Parkersburg and Belpre.

It became part of the CSX Florence Division on June 20, 2016. The line runs from Clifton Forge, Virginia, to Hinton, West Virginia, for a total of 78.6 miles (126.5 km). At its north end it continues south from the James River Subdivision and at its south end it continues south as the New River Subdivision.

At its north end it continues south from the Big Marsh Fork Subdivision & Jarrolds Valley Subdivision and at its south end it continues south as the Coal River Subdivision.

At its north end the line branches off of the Big Sandy Subdivision and at its south end the line comes to an end.
