Bigmama's is a story written and illustrated by Donald Crews, published by Greenwillow Books in 1991. [1] It is a story inspired by his own life, capturing what the summers of his childhood were like visiting his grandparents in the south. Through the illustrations, Crews shows the characters existing as children, happy and care-free enjoying summer, while including subtle details of the time period the story takes place in.

Donald Crews was born in Newark, New Jersey and spent his summers visiting his grandparents in Cottondale, Florida. [4] The idea for Bigmama’s came from Crews reminiscing with his family and telling stories to his nieces and nephews. The idea to begin illustrating some of these memories was a way to clarify details of the stories the younger family members were curious about – to show unfamiliar things such as the outhouse or the barn – to give them an idea of what summers were like back then. [4] Also, at the time Crews wrote Bigmama's, and even in an interview a few years later, he acknowledge that there weren't "many books about Black families and their lives." [4] Thus, in addition to writing Bigmama's as a way to share stories with his own family, Crews felt some responsibility to contribute this type of book to the field of children's literature. [4] The completed book was published by Greenwillow Books in 1991. [1]
The book opens with the children arriving on the train to Cottondale where they visit their grandparents each summer. Their uncle – uncle Slank – picks the family up from the train and takes them to the house where "Bigmama" and "Bigpapa" are already on the porch awaiting their arrival. They called their grandma "Bigmama" because she was their "Mama's Mama". [1] Once they've said hello, the children free themselves of their shoes and socks and begin their tour of the property, checking to make sure everything is as they remembered it. They check inside the house and then move onto the backyard, listing with excitement everything they see just as it is each summer. The children dip a bucket of water into the well for a drink and visit the chicken coop, venture farther to see the outhouse and the water pump, and then look for nests with eggs in them and worms to use for fishing.
They explore the barn and the stables to look for more eggs and to see the horses. Continuing on the children go to the pond where they can fish and swim. Then came dinner time and the whole family comes together and talk and talk. At night they would go outside and look up at the millions of stars in the sky. At the end, there is an image of a grown man looking out at a city skyline and stars at night reflecting on how he sometimes wishes he would wake up at Bigmama’s again and have all the fun and excitement of summer ahead of him.
Bigmama’s is an autobiographical story of Donald Crews' experiences visiting his family in the summers in Cottondale, Florida. [4] Toward the beginning of the book when the family is on the train arriving to Cottondale, there is a sign that says “Colored,” which is the only hint to the social context and time of segregation the story takes place in. It is Crews’ way of addressing this without making it a central plot point. [4] [5] The book’s subtle details allow space for teachers and parents to address historical social issues with young children, such as segregation, but it is not necessary to do so in order to use the book, as it's not central to the plot of the story. [7]
Crucial to this book are the concepts of family and family values, togetherness, and the importance of connection with culture and "ancestry". [5] Bigmama’s is a story that is both relatable to children through use of themes such as family, while also specifically addressing African American culture. [7] An aspect of the book that has been highlighted is that the children are shown experiencing unsupervised adventure and exploration but still near the loving and watchful eyes of family. [5]
South Dakota Public Broadcasting included Bigmama's on their list of recommended "Black History Month Books for Kids," and references the context of segregation in the book's time period not taking away from the celebratory and "carefree" nature of the story. [2] It was also included on the Teaching Books website on reading lists as well as alongside resources for teachers to create lesson plans and bring this book into classroom discussions. [3]
A review of Bigmama's in Horn Book Magazine highlighted the love and nostalgia of Crews' childhood represented in the book and the depiction of the "joyous time" where family comes together. [8]
A review from The Skanner underscores the themes of family, adventure, and curiosity that the book portrays, as well as the appreciation for the simple things in life. The review also addresses how important this book is both for children who can relate to the experience of visiting family in the countryside, like the characters in the book did, as well as bringing in a perspective of a different kind of life for those children who maybe haven't had the chance to spend time outside of a big city. It won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Biography, with the prize jury describing it as "an unflinching portrait of a not always admirable democrat but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose that brings the Jackson saga to life".
The Lion & the Mouse is a 2009 nearly wordless picture book illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. This book, published by Little, Brown and Company, tells Aesop's fable of The Lion and the Mouse. In the story, a mouse's life is a spared by a lion. Later, after the lion is trapped, the mouse is able to set the lion free. Adapting the fable, with the moral that the weak can help the strong, as a wordless picture book was seen as a successful way of overcoming the brief plot generally found in the source stories. While it was Pinkney's first wordless picture book, it was not the first time he had told the story, having previously included it in his Aesop's Fables, published in 2000. Pinkney, who had received five Caldecott Honors, became the first African American to win the Caldecott Medal for his illustrations in this book. His illustrations were generally praised for their realism and sense of place. The cover illustrations, featuring the title characters but no text, drew particular praise.
Yoruba Girl Dancing is the debut novel of Nigerian author Simi Bedford, which "tackles the weighty and painful issue of the extent to which Africans, even those who are members of the privileged classes, can gain social acceptance in 'the West.'" Yoruba Girl Dancing was first published in Great Britain in 1991 and then in the United States in 1992. It is extracted in the 2019 anthology New Daughters of Africa.
Rachel Isadora is an American illustrator, children's book author, specializing in picture books, and painter. She is most famous for the book Ben's Trumpet, runner-up for the 1980 Caldecott Medal, or Caldecott Honor Book, and winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book honor. Ben's Trumpet was adapted to video and also translated into a ballet by the Boston ballet company BalletRox in 2009. The more than 150 children's books Isadora has written and illustrated span a wide variety of topics, including ballet and dance, American urban culture and family life, life in Africa, and traditional fairy tales. Several of Isadora’s books have been selected by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Isadora was a professional ballet dancer before an injury led to a change of careers. In addition to freelance writing and illustration, Isadora shows and sells oil paintings, many of which reflect her love of dance, as well as her experiences living in Africa and New York City.
Locomotive is a 2013 children's book written and illustrated by Brian Floca. A non-fiction book written primarily in free verse, the book follows a family as they ride a transcontinental steam engine train in summer of 1869. The book details the workers, passengers, landscape, and effects of building and operating the first transcontinental railroad. The book also contains prose about the earlier and later history of locomotives. The book took Floca four years to create, which included a change in perspective from following the crew of the train to following a family. Floca conducted extensive research including his own train ride and consultation with experts to ensure he had the details all correct.

A member of the faculty of the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in children's and adult literature, Kurtz is an international advocate for literacy and writing.
