Bilal Abdul Hai Hasani Nadwi (born October 3, 1969) is an Indian Islamic scholar, da'i, Hadith lecturer and author who has served as the Chancellor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama since 2023. He also serves as the General Secretary of the Payam-e-Insaniyat and a member of the executive council of Darul Uloom Deoband.

Early life and education

Nadwi was born on October 3, 1969, in Takia Kalan, Raebareli, India. [2] [3] His father Muhammad al-Hasani was an Islamic scholar, founder, and editor-in-chief of the Arabic magazine Al Baas Al Islami. [4] [5] His grandfather, Syed Abdul Ali Hasani, was the elder brother of Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi and the 6th chancellor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama. [6] [7] His great-grandfather, Abdul Hai Hasani was a writer who wrote the biographical book, Nuzhat al-Khawātir. [8] [9] Nadwi is a descendant of Hasan ibn Hasan and Hasan ibn Ali [10] through Syed Ahmad Barelvi. [11] [12]

Nadwi lost his father at ten, and was raised by his elder brother Abdullah Hasani Nadwi. [13] [14] [15] He received his primary education in his native land, under the supervision of Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi. After that, he enrolled in Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama for higher education and completed the Aalimiyyah course in 1988 and the Fazīlah course in 1990 there. [2] [3]

He received an Ijazah in Hadith from Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi, Abdur Rashīd Nomani, Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda, Abdullah ibn Abdul Aziz al-Aqīl, Yunus Jaunpuri, Ahmad Hasan Tonki, and Shaikh Ahmad Shafi. He is an authorised disciple of Muhammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi and Sayed Nafees al-Hussaini in Tariqah. [2]

Career

In 1991, Nadwi began his career as a teacher of hadith at Madrasa Ziyaul Uloom in Raebareli. [16] [2] [13] He subsequently joined Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama where he lectures on Islamic thought. [2] He succeeded his brother as the general secretary of the Payam-e-Insaniyat in 2013. [2] [9]

On May 11, 2021, Nadwi became the elected vice principal of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, [2] and succeeded Rabey Hasani Nadwi as the chancellor of Nadwatul Ulama on April 14, 2023, [17] and as a member of the executive council of Darul Uloom Deoband on August 29, 2023. [18] [19] [20] He was also the deputy moderator of Madrasa Ziyaul Uloom Raebareli, editor-in-chief of Payām-e-Arafāt, director of Imam Abi al-Hasan An-Nadwi in Raebareli, [16] [13] [21] and a member of the executive council of Nadwatul Ulama. [13] In June 2023, he was appointed to the board of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) as a secretary. [22]

In September 2023, when the AIMPLB decided to launch an India-wide campaign for helping Muslim women secure inheritance rights according to the Shariah; Nadwi was made responsible for its Tafheem-e-Shariat Committee, a group formed to support people with interpretation of the Islamic law. [23]

Madrassa Shahi is an Islamic seminary in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1879 by the poor Muslims of Moradabad under the supervision of Islamic scholar, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, who also established the Darul Uloom Deoband. This started as Madrasatul Ghuraba, but gained recognition as Madrasa Shahi. Its first principal was Ahmad Hasan Amrohi.

Noor Alam Khalil Amini was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar, academic and a litterateur of Arabic and Urdu. He was a senior professor of Arabic language and literature at the Darul Uloom Deoband. His book Falastin Fi Intezari Salahidin was subject of a doctoral study at Assam University and his book Miftahul Arabia is part of dars-e-nizami curricula in various madrasas.

<i>Al-Raid</i> Indian Arabic magazine

Al-Raid is a biweekly Arabic magazine published by Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, with a central focus on the Muslim community in India and their circumstances. Established in 1959 by Rabey Hasani Nadwi and further developed by Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadvi, Wazeh Rashid Hasani Nadwi, Abdullah Hasani Nadwi, and others, the magazine aims to spotlight articles and research conducted by its own students. Shafiqur Rahman Nadwi (1942–2002), also written as Shafiq-ur-Rahman Nadwi, was an Indian Islamic scholar and a writer of Arabic and Urdu. He was an alumni and professor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama and the author of the famous book of Fiqh in Arabic, Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar. He also served as the office-in-charge of the madrasas affiliated with Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, which numbered 150 at the time.

Abdul Aleem Farooqui was an Indian Islamic scholar who served as the general secretary of the United Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind for seven years and as the general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (A) for 13 years. Lastly, he served as the Vice President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (A).

Sharif Hasan Deobandi was an Indian Islamic scholar and Muhaddith. He served as Sheikh al-Hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband from 1972 to 1977. He also worked as a professor of Hadith and Sheikh al-Hadith at Jamia Islamia Talimuddin in Dabhel for almost ten years.

Syed Ahmad Dehlavi was an Indian Muslim academician and hadith scholar who served as the second principal and Sheikh al-Hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband between 1884 and 1890. He specialised in Islamic astronomy and mathematics. His students included Abdul Hayy Hasani, Murtaza Hasan Chandpuri, Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, Aziz-ul-Rahman Usmani, Muhammad Yasin Deobandi, Ubaidullah Sindhi, and Ashraf Ali Thanwi.

<i>Tameer-e Hayat</i> Indian Urdu magazine

Tameer-e Hayat is a biweekly Urdu magazine published by Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama since 1963. Founded under the editorship of Mohammad al-Hasani, it is currently overseen by Shamsul Haq Nadwi. The magazine follows a biweekly schedule, releasing on the 10th and 25th of each month. It serves as a platform for Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama to address religious and global concerns, with a specific focus on the dynamics of Indian society. Also, it interprets the thoughts, ideas, theories, and beliefs of Nadwatul Ulama. It is the successor to Al-Nadwa, the first magazine of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, founded by Shibli Nomani.

Syed Abdul Hai Hasani (1869–1923) was an Indian Islamic scholar, historian, biographer, writer, Sufi, and Hakim. He served as the fourth Chancellor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama between 1915 and 1923. He was the father of Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi. His works include Nuzhat al-Khawātir, Al Hind Fil 'Ahd al-Islami, Ath' Thaqafat al-Islamiyya Fil-Hind, Yād-Ayyām, and Gul-e-Ra'na.
