Bill Aulet is the Managing Director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship at MIT [1] and Professor of the Practice at the MIT Sloan School of Management [2] and MIT Sloan Executive Education. [3] [4] He is also the author of Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to a Successful Startup. [5]

Career

Since Aulet became Managing Director in 2009, he has conceived, designed and overseen the implementation of numerous innovative programs, from new courses (Linked Data Ventures, [6] Entrepreneurial Product Marketing and Development, Energy Ventures, [7] Applications of Advanced Entrepreneurial Techniques) and student initiatives (MIT Clean Energy Prize, [8] MIT Entrepreneurship Review [9] ) to accelerators (Global Founders’ Skills Accelerator, [10] Beehive Cooperative [11] ) and thought leadership initiatives (Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program [12] or REAP [12] ). [13] In April 2013, Aulet was awarded the Adolf F. Monosson Prize [14] for Entrepreneurial Mentoring at MIT. [15]

Prior to joining MIT, Aulet worked for more than a decade at IBM before launching a series of startups, including 3-D imaging company SensAble Technologies Inc. [16]

Personal life

A former professional basketball player, Aulet lives in Belmont, Massachusetts with his wife; they have four grown sons. One of Aulet's sons is Tom Aulet, founded the company Ergatta, which makes gamified indoor rowers. [26] Aulet holds a bachelor’s in engineering from Harvard University and an SM from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Educational activities

Bill Aulet teaches the MIT massive open online course (MOOC) on entrepreneurship: "Entrepreneurship 101: Who Is Your Customer?" [27] and is Instructor at MIT Bootcamps. [28]

The MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition is a student-managed business plan competition, where undergraduates and postgraduates from various programs and all levels at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) organize and enter the competition. Teams must include at least one full-time MIT student, but membership is not limited to the MIT community. The competition is supported by the MIT Entrepreneurship Center at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Every year a total of $300,000 is distributed as non-dilutive grant money. Since 1990, over 160 companies have been started as a result of the competition, generating 4,600 jobs, receiving over $1.3 billion in follow-up venture capital funding and totaling a cumulative market value of over $15 billion.

Xconomy was a media company providing news on business, life sciences, and technology focusing on the regions of Boston, Boulder/Denver, Detroit, New York City, Raleigh-Durham, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. The website was launched in June 2007 by founders Robert Buderi and Rebecca Zacks. Xconomy content covered "local personalities, companies, and technological trends to business and technology leaders" with a target audience of "entrepreneurs, business and technology executives and innovators, venture capitalists, angel investors, lawyers, and university researchers and officials." Bill Mitchell of the Poynter Institute described Xconomy in 2010 as reflecting "the insiderish feel of, say, Politico, but with some of the familiarity that you might expect from a small town paper."

From 1978 to 2021 the MIT Enterprise Forum (MITEF) operated chapters in major cities in the U.S. and worldwide. The chapters ran a range of events and programs targeted to help early-stage entrepreneurs, promote innovative technology to the general public. In the spring of 2021, MIT Technology Review, the parent and MIT Enterprise Forum, Inc (“Global”) notified the Chapters that MIT Technology Review decided to no longer support the Chapters of the MIT Enterprise Forum. Martin Trust also known as Marty Trust was an American business magnate entrepreneur and philanthropist who was also known for his contributions to the economy of Sri Lanka by modernising the country's apparel industry. He is also known as the 'father of the modern Sri Lankan apparel industry', as he was instrumental in making the country one of the global leaders in the apparel industry. He is still regarded as one of the pioneers of American fashion retail sector. He died on 12 September 2019 at his home at the age of 84 in Boston, US.
