The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is a membership organization dedicated to fostering the research and dissemination of the history and record of baseball,primarily through the use of statistics. The organization was founded in Cooperstown,New York,on August 10,1971,at a meeting of 16 “statistorians”coordinated by sportswriter Bob Davids. The organization now reports a membership of over 7,000 and is based in Phoenix,Arizona.
Charles Roscoe Barnes was one of the stars of baseball's National Association (1871–1875) and the early National League (1876–1881),playing second base and shortstop. He played for the dominant Boston Red Stockings teams of the early 1870s,along with Albert Spalding,Cal McVey,George Wright,Harry Wright,Jim O'Rourke,and Deacon White. Despite playing for these star-studded teams,many claim that Ross was the most valuable to his teams.
The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP),often known simply as the National Association (NA),was the first fully-professional sports league in baseball. The NA was founded in 1871 and continued through the 1875 season. It succeeded and incorporated several professional clubs from the previous National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) of 1857–1870,sometimes called "the amateur Association". In turn,several NA clubs created the succeeding National League of Professional Baseball Clubs,which joined with the American League of Professional Base Ball Clubs to form Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1903.
Douglas L. Allison was an American Major League Baseball player. He began his career as a catcher for the original Cincinnati Red Stockings,the first fully professional baseball team. Allison was one of the first catchers to stand directly behind the batter,as a means to prevent baserunners from stealing bases. He was considered a specialist,at a time when some of the better batsmen who manned the position normally rested,or substituted at other fielding positions. Allison became the earliest known player to use a type of baseball glove when he donned buckskin mittens to protect his hands in 1870.
Calvin Alexander McVey was an American professional baseball player during the 1860s and 1870s. McVey's importance to the game stems from his play on two of the earliest professional baseball teams,the original Cincinnati Red Stockings and the National Association Boston Red Stockings. He also played on the inaugural National League pennant-winning team,the 1876 Chicago White Stockings.
George William Hall was a professional baseball player who played in the National Association and later the National League. Born in Stepney,England,Hall later immigrated to the U.S. He made his professional debut on May 5,1871. While playing for the Louisville Grays,he was banned from Major League Baseball after an 1877 gambling scandal.
Robert Vavasour Ferguson was an American infielder,league official,manager and umpire in the early days of baseball,playing both before and after baseball became a professional sport. In addition to playing and managing,he served as president of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players from 1872 through 1875,the sport's first entirely professional league. His character and unquestioned honesty were highly regarded during a period in baseball history where the game's reputation was badly damaged by gamblers and rowdy behavior by players and fans. However,his bad temper and stubbornness were traits that created trouble for him at times during his career,and caused him to be disliked by many. His nickname,"Death to Flying Things",was derived from his greatness as a defensive player.

Robert T. Mathews was an American right-handed professional baseball pitcher who played in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players,the National League of Major League Baseball and the American Association for twenty years beginning in the late 1860s. He is credited as being one of the inventors of the spitball pitch,in each of three major leagues. which was rediscovered or reintroduced to the major leagues after he died. He is also credited with the first legal pitch which broke away from the batter. He is listed at 5 feet 5 inches tall and 140 pounds,which is small for a pro athlete even in his time,when the average height of an American male in the mid-19th century was 5 foot 7.
Ledell N. Titcomb,often erroneously referred to as Cannonball Titcomb,was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played for four major league teams from 1886 to 1890.
Robert Edward Addy,nicknamed "The Magnet",was a Canadian right fielder and second baseman in Major League Baseball,whose professional career spanned from 1871 in the National Association to 1877 in the National League. He is credited as the first player to introduce the slide in an organized game,and later attempted to create a game of baseball that would have been played on ice. He is also credited as the first person born in Canada to appear in a major league game.
James ("Jimmy") Leon Wood was an American second baseman and manager in early professional Major League Baseball (MLB) who hailed from Brooklyn,New York. He was the player-manager for four teams in the early National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP –1871–1875 –later known simply as the National Association –the predecessor of the modern National League of Professional Baseball Clubs –later known simply as the National League,[founded 1876] of modern Major League Baseball,where he spent his entire base ball career in the 1860s into the 1870s.
John Martin "Marty" Swandell was a German–American baseball player and umpire. He spent parts of two seasons as a player in the National Association (NA),a professional league,and also had an eight-year career in the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP),a league with amateur status,between 1863 and 1870.
Nathaniel Woodhull "Nat" Hicks was an American professional baseball player. He played as a catcher in Major League Baseball for six seasons,two in the National League. Hicks was one of the first catchers to stand directly behind the batter,which allowed future Hall of Fame pitcher,Candy Cummings to develop the first curveball used in baseball. Hicks was a popular and highly regarded player during his time in baseball,but injuries sustained over the course of his career cut his playing time short.
William H. Lennon was an American Major League Baseball player born in Brooklyn,New York. He played catcher for three seasons in the National Association from 1871 to 1873,and managed 14 games for the 1871 Fort Wayne Kekiongas. Lennon also played first base,shortstop,third base,and right field during his professional career. He worked a total of 15 National Association games as an umpire between 1871 and 1874.
Charles Hodes was an American professional baseball player who played as a catcher,infielder,and outfielder in the National Association for three seasons from 1871 to 1874. A Brooklyn native,Hodes played one season each for the Chicago White Stockings,Troy Haymakers,and Brooklyn Atlantics. He had a career batting average of .231 in 63 total games before dying from tuberculosis in 1875.
