Bill Borger Jr. (born 15 December 1974) is a Canadian businessman, adventurer, and Canadian Chartered Accountant. [1] On September 9, 2000 Borger became the first Calgarian to successfully swim the English Channel. [2] As a part of the English Channel swim Borger raised $100,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association. [3] On May 11, 2011 Borger became the first Canadian to have both swum the English Channel and to have climbed Mount Everest. [4] The Mount Everest climb was used to raise funds for the Calgary Handibus Association; for this charity Borger raised $400,000. [5] Borger's website states, as of June 6, 2011 that monies raised for the Calgary Handibus Association are $502,350. [6] The combined efforts of climbing Mount Everest and swimming the English Channel placed Borger as the fifth person ever to do so; these combined events are known as Peak and Pond. [7]

Mountain climbing

Borger began climbing in 2000 and, from 2009 to 2011, had climbed over 40 peaks in North and South America, Asia, and Europe including Mount Rainier and Denali in North America [9] and The Matterhorn [10] and Mont Blanc in Europe (the highest peak in the Alps). [11]

On July 14, 2012 Bill Borger along with climbing partner John Furneaux set a new route during their summit of Mount Thor [12] that they named, The Great Escape. This climb was also the first free climb of the Southwest Face. [13] [14]

Swimming

July 23, 2000, Borger placed third on the 26.4 km long Lake Zurich Swim with a time of 8h 52m 45 sec. [15]

September 9, 2000, Borger crossed the 21-mile English Channel. The feat took him 12 hours and 11 minutes of continuous swimming without a wetsuit. [16]

Cycling

In 1996, Borger cycled across Canada in 32 days. [17]

The mountain was named after Sir William Edmond Logan, a Canadian geologist and founder of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). Mount Thor Mountain in Nunavut, Canada

Mount Thor, officially gazetted as Thor Peak, is a mountain with an elevation of 1,675 m (5,495 ft) located in Auyuittuq National Park, on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. The mountain is located 46 km (29 mi) northeast of Pangnirtung and features Earth's greatest vertical drop of 1,250 m (4,100 ft), with the cliff overhanging at an average angle of 15 degrees from vertical. Despite its remoteness, this feature makes the mountain a popular rock climbing site. Camping is allowed, with several designated campsites located throughout the length of Akshayuk Pass. For climbers looking to scale Mount Thor, there is an established campsite a few kilometres north of its base, complete with windbreaks and emergency shelters.

David Anthony Rodney is a Canadian politician and was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta representing the constituency of Calgary-Lougheed, first as a Progressive Conservative and then the United Conservative Party when it was formed in July 2017 by the merger of the PC Party merged with the Wildrose Party. He was first elected in the 2004 provincial election and re-elected three times. He resigned on November 1, 2017 in order to open a seat for new United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney. He was the first Canadian to ascend to the summit of Mount Everest twice.

Andrew James Lock OAM is an Australian high-altitude mountaineer. He became the first, and still remains the only, Australian to climb all 14 "eight-thousanders" on 2 October 2009, and is the 18th person to ever complete this feat. He climbed 13 of the 14 without using bottled oxygen, only using it on Mount Everest, which he has summited three times. He retired from eight-thousander climbing in 2012.

A mountain formerly known as Mount Pétain, but with no current official name, is located on the border of Alberta and British Columbia (BC) on the Continental Divide. It was named in 1918 after the then-to-be Nazi-collaborator, Marshal Philippe Pétain, who was then an honoured war hero for the Allies of World War I. The name was retained despite the later reversal in Pétain's reputation after his having been Head of State of Vichy France and being partly responsible for the murder of 76,000 Jews.

Jordan Romero American mountain climber

Jordan Romero is an American mountain climber who was 13 years old when he reached the summit of Mount Everest. Romero was accompanied by his father, Paul Romero, his step-mother, Karen Lundgren, and three Sherpas, Ang Pasang Sherpa, Lama Dawa Sherpa, and Lama Karma Sherpa. The previous record for youngest to climb Everest was held by Ming Kipa of Nepal who was 15 years old when she reached the summit on May 22, 2003.

Jamie Clarke was born in 1968 in Alberta. He is a Canadian outdoorsman, adventurer, author, filmmaker, actor, and public speaker. He has stood on top of Mount Everest twice in 1997 and 2010, climbed the Seven Summits, and is one of the few westerners who have crossed The Empty Quarter on camels. In 2019, Clarke crossed the Mongolian desert, travelling east to west, with his son Khobe. They travelled on motorbikes, then summited Khüiten Peak, the highest mountain in Mongolia.

Sudarshan Gautam is Canadian mountain climber and actor. He is first person without arms to have reached the summit of Mount Everest without the use of prosthetics. He did this on May 20, 2013. Gautam lost his arms as a result of an accident in his childhood. In 2014, he appeared in the Nepalese movie Himmatwali.

Don Morrison (mountaineer)

Donald Kenneth Morrison was a British climber and mountaineer. Morrison first became known as a pioneer rock climber in Canada, then in England's Peak District and he led three expeditions to the Himalayas. He died in 1977 leading an attempt on Latok II peak in the Karakoram.

Mount Everest in 2016

Mount Everest in 2016 covers events about Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth located in Nepal and Chinese Tibet in Asia. It is a popular climbing destination for extreme high altitude climbers, with several hundred climbing each year despite various dangers.
