The Lake Zurich Marathon Swim belongs to the world's longest swimming marathon races. [1] It is held annually in August and is organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team.

Contents

The participants swim from Rapperswil 47°13′40″N8°48′47″E / 47.227690°N 8.812953°E / 47.227690; 8.812953 to Zurich, with a total course length of 16.16 miles (26.01 km). [2]

A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Sri Chinmoy</span> Indian writer and guru (1931–2007)

Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, better known as Sri Chinmoy, was an Indian spiritual leader who taught meditation in the United States after moving to New York City in 1964. Chinmoy established his first meditation center in Queens, New York, and eventually had 7,000 students in 60 countries. He was an author, artist, poet, and musician; he also held public events such as concerts and meditations on the theme of inner peace. Chinmoy advocated a spiritual path to God through prayer and meditation. He advocated athleticism including distance running, swimming, and weightlifting. He organized marathons and other races, and was an active runner and, following a knee injury, weightlifter. Some ex-members have accused Chinmoy of running a cult.

Open water swimming is a swimming discipline which takes place in outdoor bodies of water such as open oceans, lakes, and rivers. Competitive open water swimming is governed by the International Swimming Federation, World Aquatics, except when it is part of multi-sport events, which are governed by the World Triathlon.

The Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race is the world's longest certified footrace. In 1996 Sri Chinmoy created this event as a 2,700-mile (4,345 km) race. At the award ceremony that year he declared that the 1997 edition would be extended to 3,100 miles (4,989 km).

Suprabha Beckjord is an ultramarathon runner from Washington, D.C. She is an owner of a gift shop and a disciple of Sri Chinmoy.

The first world record in the 400 metres individual medley in long course (50 metres) swimming was recognized by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in 1957, followed by the women a year later. In the short course (25 metres) swimming events the world's governing body recognizes world records since March 3, 1991.

Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of World Aquatics, in which competitors are subject to only a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters and reaching 1,500 meters, also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Al Howie</span> Canadian long-distance runner

Arthur "Al" Howie was a Canadian long-distance runner who won more than fifty marathons, ultramarathons, and multiday races in over two decades, including the 1991 Trans Canada Highway run in the record time of 72 days and 10 hours. A brass plaque on Victoria's Mile Zero marker commemorates this athletic event for which he raised $750,000 for a fund for children with special needs. Two weeks after running across Canada he won the Sri Chinmoy 1300 Miler in New York improving on his own world record time. Both the Trans Canada run and the 1,300-mile (2,100 km) race qualified for the Guinness Book of Records. He lived in Duncan, B.C., from 2005 until his death in 2016. He had been receiving treatment for Diabetes I. The City of Duncan awarded him the Perpetual Trophy for Excellence and Sportsmanship in December 2007, and in 2014 he was inducted into The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bill Borger</span> Canadian accountant

Bill Borger Jr. is a Canadian businessman, adventurer, and Canadian Chartered Accountant. On September 9, 2000 Borger became the first Calgarian to successfully swim the English Channel. As a part of the English Channel swim Borger raised $100,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association. On May 11, 2011 Borger became the first Canadian to have both swum the English Channel and to have climbed Mount Everest. The Mount Everest climb was used to raise funds for the Calgary Handibus Association; for this charity Borger raised $400,000. Borger's website states, as of June 6, 2011 that monies raised for the Calgary Handibus Association are $502,350. The combined efforts of climbing Mount Everest and swimming the English Channel placed Borger as the fifth person ever to do so; these combined events are known as Peak and Pond.

The swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 13 August at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium. The women's open-water marathon was held on August 15, and the men's open water race on August 16 in Fort Copacabana.

Nejib Belhedi is a Tunisian Marathon Icy and Iron open-water swimmer.

Charlotte Samuels is an American swimmer. She is believed to be the youngest person to complete the 17.5-mile Ederle Swim from New York City's Battery Park to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, which she did at age 15 in 2013. She finished the swim in 5:38:41. She was featured in Sports Illustrated for this accomplishment.

Dr Thom Van Every is a UK trained medical doctor, entrepreneur and children's author. He is considered a pioneer in the UK of online medical services having launched through his website Dr Thom the first regulated online medical clinic, the first home HIV testing service, and in partnership with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust the first NHS online service. He appeared on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour discussing a DIY cervical smear test using a tampon.

The 12+24 Hour Race Basel is an Ultramarathon race in Basel, Switzerland. The run takes place annually in May, organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. It is held on the Sports Facilities St. Jakob on a 1.1 kilometer route.
