William E. Thornton is an American politician who served as the mayor of San Antonio,Texas from 1995 to 1997. [1] He succeeded Nelson Wolff and was himself followed by Howard Peak, [2] after Thornton finished third in his bid for reelection. [3] Thornton also served as a member of the San Antonio City Council for district 8. [4] During the 1997 mayoral election,public relations consultant T. J. Connolly defected from Thornton to Peak's campaign and was subsequently reported to the police for stalking Thornton and his wife. The incident was investigated by the police found no basis for the charge. Connolly describes the incident as "a cold,calculated,well-planned political move". [3] Thornton was a noted proponent for proposals to restore and expand San Antonio's historic center in the area around the Alamo, [5] as well as a supporter of tax abatements to promote tourism through the construction of new hotels. [6] His term as mayor was marked by tension between the mayor and members of the city council (including his ultimate successor Howard Peak). [7]
Thornton was born in Abilene,Texas. He moved to San Antonio in 1963 to attend Trinity University. Two years later,he moved to Dallas to attend dental school,before returning to San Antonio in 1972. [4] He has a doctoral degree in dental surgery from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry. [8] Thornton's professional career was as an oral surgeon. Wurzbach Parkway is a part freeway and part major arterial road in San Antonio,Texas,built to provide relief on Interstate 410 (I-410) and Loop 1604 on the city's north side. The highway is named for Harry M. Wurzbach,who represented the San Antonio area in Congress as a Republican in the 1920s and 1930s. The congressman's name was first applied to the connecting Wurzbach Road. The highway's western third was built as an expressway with at-grade intersections and the remainder as a freeway. The opening in September 2015 of an interchange with U.S. Highway 281 completed primary construction of the parkway. The highway,along with part of Wurzbach Road near the Ingram Park Mall,is maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation despite not carrying a state highway designation. Rather,it is being developed and maintained under the Principal Arterial State System (PASS) program,under which it is designated as PASS Project 1502. The parkway includes an interchange with US 281,and drivers can access I-10 and I-35 via local roads that extend the parkway.

Interim mayor Ivy Taylor ran for election to a full term and narrowly defeated former state senator Leticia Van de Putte in the runoff election on June 13,2015,to become the first African American elected to the position.
On May 6,2017,the city of San Antonio,Texas held an election to choose the next mayor of San Antonio. As no candidate secured a majority of the vote,a runoff was held on June 10,2017 with Councilman Ron Nirenberg defeating incumbent mayor Ivy Taylor.
