Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy or simply Bindhu Malini is an Indian singer, composer, and graphic designer. She has received National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer (2018) [1] [2] and Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer - Kannada (2019) for her songs in the movie Nathicharami. [3] She has composed and recorded songs for films and albums in Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada languages.

Personal life

Bindumalini was born in Chennai in a musical family. Her mother N. Vishalakshi is a graded Akasvani Carnatic singer and grandmother Seetha Doraiswamy was a known Jal Tarang instrumentalist. [4] She holds a degree in Graphic design from the National Institute of Design. [5]

Bindumalini married Vasu Dixit, a vocalist from Bangalore, who runs a folk-rock fusion music band called Swarathma. [6]

Career

Trained both in Carnatic and Hindustani music, Bindumalini was influenced by the poems of saint Kabir and the songs of Kumar Gandharva. [6]

Bindumalini's album ‛Suno Bhai’, a collection of Saint Kabir's poems, was a collaboration with Vedanth Bharadwaj. [6]

As composer

Bindumalini scored music for the 2016 Tamil movie Aruvi with Vedanth Bharadwaj. [7] In Kannada, she first collaborated with Ananya Kasaravalli and scored music for the movie ‛Harikatha Prasanga’ [4] which won Best Film award at the 9th edition of Bangalore International Film Festival, 2017. [8] In 2018, Bindumalini composed music for the movie Nathicharami which brought her a National award. [2] Incidentally, most of her movies were women-centric.

Nathicharami is a 2018 Indian Kannada-language film written by Sandhya Rani, directed by Mansore and produced by M. Ramesh, under the banner Tejaswini Enterprises. Jaganmohan Reddy and Shivkumar Reddy are the other producers. The music of the film is scored by Bindhu Malini. The film features Sruthi Hariharan and Sanchari Vijay in the lead roles with Sharanya, Poornachandra Mysore, Balaji Manohar and Gopal Deshpande in key roles. The sound design is done by Mahavir Sabbanavar and cinematography by Guruprasad Narnad. Manasa Mustafa has designed the costumes for the film.

Latha Hamsalekha Indian playback singer

Latha, commonly known as Latha Hamsalekha, is an Indian playback singer in Kannada. She is the wife of composer Hamsalekha. For her song Aa Arunodaya Chanda in the movie Arunodaya, Latha was awarded the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1999-2000.
