[1] Founded in 2006 by Adekunle Ayeni, the company manages strategic communications programs for companies with interests in entertainment, lifestyle, and fashion, media, consumer and technology.
Black House Media has its historical roots in All You Ever Need in Entertainment (A.Y.E.N.I. Entertainment), a publicist service company, now defunct. BHM came into existence employing Fagbule Olanike as its first staff. [2] The firm adopts the principles and practice of traditional, social and digital public relations. The company exceeded one million dollars valuation in 2012 and has "nearly 60 people" as employees. [3] In 2013, the firm became a member of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), a trade sectoral group founded in 1984. [4]
BHM was identified as one of the "Only eight out of the 48 members of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) (that) pay workers regularly" by The Brand Journalists' Association of Nigeria, in a feature report done on the public relations industry in Nigeria. [5] Raheem Akingbolu of This Day , in his report titled "54 Years After, Marketing Sector Still Experience Enormous Challenges", described the firm as "taking the lead in the area of digital PR". [6] In Nigeria, BHM has also been described as "a public relations firm that is reputed to have handled most entertainment events." [7]
In 2012, Black House Media raised a team of software and content developers to develop the BHM App, the "first PR mobile application" and "a pioneering effort." [8] The application is a pool of resources for the Nigerian public relations practitioners, designed to meet the information needs of the app user in Nigeria. [9] [10]
Public relations (PR) is the practice of managing and disseminating information from an individual or an organization to the public in order to influence their perception. Public relations and publicity differ in that PR is controlled internally, whereas publicity is not controlled and contributed by external parties. Public relations may include an organization or individual gaining exposure to their audiences using topics of public interest and news items that do not require direct payment. The exposure mostly is media-based. This differentiates it from advertising as a form of marketing communications. Public relations aims to create or obtain coverage for clients for free, also known as earned media, rather than paying for marketing or advertising also known as paid media. But in the early 21st century, advertising is also a part of broader PR activities.
