The Bachelor is an American dating and relationship reality television series that debuted on March 25, 2002, on ABC. For its first 25 seasons, the show was hosted by Chris Harrison. As the flagship of the original The Bachelor franchise, its success resulted in several spin-offs including The Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad, Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise, The Bachelor Winter Games, The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart, The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons – Ever!, and The Bachelor Summer Games, as well as spawning many international editions of the shows.

The ninth season of The Bachelorette premiered on May 27, 2013. This season features 27-year-old Desiree Hartsock, a bridal stylist from Colorado, who placed fourth on season 17 of The Bachelor. The show ran for a total of twelve episodes, with Hartsock going on dates with a total of 25 men, all aged 26–34. Episodes included date activities such as dodgeball, dancing on the side of a building with harnesses, and a helicopter ride to meet victims of Hurricane Sandy. The final episode aired on August 5, 2013, with Hartsock getting engaged to her final man standing, Chris Siegfried. On January 18, 2015, the two were married in Southern California.

Both Bachelorettes were on the 19th season of The Bachelor, featuring Chris Soules. This season premiered on May 18, 2015 and concluded on July 27, 2015 in which 28-year-old personal trainer Shawn Booth was named the winner. On November 2, 2018, the couple announced they ended their relationship.

He was a football tight end at Illinois State and was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2014, and was on the practice squad of the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. After being released by the Raiders, Underwood became a contestant on the 14th season of The Bachelorette, and was then announced as the lead of the 23rd season of The Bachelor.
