Bloodloss was an Australian post-punk, grunge band formed in 1982. The original line-up was Martin Bland on drums, Renestair E.J. on guitar and saxophone, Jim Selene on bass guitar, and Sharron Weatherill on lead vocals and guitar. They issued five albums: Human Skin Suit (June 1988), The Truth Is Marching In (1990), In-a-Gadda-Da-Change (1993), Live My Way (March 1996) and Misty (1996).

History

Bloodloss was formed in Sydney late in 1982 as a post-punk, grunge band by Martin Bland on drums (ex-Chaos, Head On, Crawling Eye, Acid Drops), Renestair E.J. (née Eric Reynolds) on guitar and saxophone (ex-Head On), Jim Selene on bass guitar (ex-Spell) and Sharron Weatherill on lead vocals and guitar. [1] Bland and Renestair E.J.'s earlier Adelaide-based group, Head On, are described by Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, as "a loud, Detroit-fuelled punk band in the vein of The Stooges and MC5." [1] Renestair E.J. had relocated to Sydney while Bland remained in Adelaide to briefly join Crawling Eye and then Acid Drops before also moving to Sydney. [1] [2]

Bloodloss had a run of temporary drummers prior to Bland joining. [1] AllMusic's Ned Raggett described the group's sound as "loud blues/Vegas/punk craziness." [3] Late in 1983, when Stuart Gray (a.k.a. Stu Spasm) joined on guitar and vocals, the group changed their name to Zulu Rattle. [1] [2] They issued a sole track, "Terror Train", on a various artists' compilation album, Strawberry Hills (1984), via Green Records. [1] In March 1984 Bland and Gray left to form Salamander Jim alongside Tex Perkins and Zulu Rattle disbanded. [1] [4]

Bland returned to Adelaide in 1985 where he rejoined Selene, who was a member of Primevils with Dave Mason on guitar and vocals (ex-Head On, Acid Drops) and Su Severin on guitar (ex-Crawling Eye). [1] That line-up issued a single, "I Saw My Name" (November 1986), which was co-written by Bland, Mason, Severin and J Syrokos. [1] [5] Bland and Gray formed a noise rock group, Lubricated Goat, in 1986 in Sydney. [6] Renestair E.J. joined Primevils prior to recording their debut and sole album, Chicken Factory, which was released via Greasy Pop Records in May 1987. [1]

Back in 1986 Renestair E.J. and Weatherhill reformed Bloodloss in Adelaide by recruiting Charlie Tolnay on lead guitar (ex-Grong Grong, also in King Snake Roost), Andrew Stosch (a.k.a. Andrew Foley) on drums and Chris Wiley on bass guitar (from Fear and Loathing). [1] [2] They issued a music cassette, Bloodloss, in that year. [1] [2]

Bland rejoined Bloodloss in 1987 as second drummer with Stosch. [1] They issued an album, Human Skin Suit, in June 1988, which McFarlane opined was "a jazzy brand of pre-grunge noise." [1] [2] Afterwards Tolnay focussed solely on his work with King Snake Roost, Weatherhill left and Bland shifted over to lead vocals and guitar. [1] [2]

The new line-up released a single, "Smell Machine", in March 1989 before Wiley left and Selene returned on bass guitar. In 1990 they issued their next album, The Truth Is Marching In, before disbanding in the next year. [1] Bland and Renestair E.J. returned to Lubricated Goat in 1990 in Sydney. [6] Then they relocated to Seattle where they resumed Bloodloss in 1993 with Mark Arm on guitar and vocals and fellow Australian expatriate, Guy Maddison, on bass guitar and vocals (ex-Lubricated Goat, Monroe's Fur, Greenhouse Effect). [1] [2] [6] Arm was a member of Seattle-based grunge band, Mudhoney. [1] [3] [7]

Bloodloss released an album, Live My Way, in March 1996, on Warner/Reprise which McFarlane observed provided "delta blues by way of Captain Beefheart and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion." [1] Raggett rated the album at four out of five stars and found the group "dedicated to amped-up, brutally trashy fun... [Arm] steps back from the spotlight except on the hilarious 'The Truth Is Marching In'; otherwise, it's Renestair and Bland's show first and foremost, and they put on a good one." [8]

They followed with Misty later that year on Au-go-go Records, it "contained material from 1993–1994 which displayed echoes of Pere Ubu, Thug and all manner of jazz and blues." [1] The group disbanded in 1997. [2] Maddison joined Arm in Mudhoney. [3]

Mudhoney is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1988, following the demise of Green River. Its members are singer and rhythm guitarist Mark Arm, lead guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison and drummer Dan Peters. Original bassist Matt Lukin left the band in 1999.

Green River (band) American rock band

Green River was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984. Although the band had very little commercial impact outside their native Seattle, Green River were pioneers of the grunge music genre. The grunge style was featured both in Green River's own music and the music its members would create in future bands, including Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam. Green River reunited for several live shows in 2008 and 2009.

Kim Salmon Musical artist

Kim Leith Salmon is an Australian rock musician and songwriter from Perth. He has worked in various groups including The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Kim Salmon and the Business, and Darling Downs. Australian rock musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described Salmon as one of the first Australians to "embrace wholeheartedly the emergent punk phenomenon of the mid-to-late 1970s" with The Scientists. He declared that Beasts of Bourbon were "masters of uncompromising gutbucket blues and hard-edged rock'n'roll". In 2004 Salmon was inducted into the West Australian Music Industry Association Hall of Fame and in 2007, into the Music Victoria Awards Hall of Fame.

Lubricated Goat are an Australian noise rock band which originally formed in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Stu Spasm. They achieved brief notoriety in November 1988 for appearing nude on the ABC TV program Blah Blah Blah, wearing only their instruments and shoes. Mainly influenced by the Stooges and the Birthday Party, they are credited for playing a grimy, confrontational style of rock, which preceded grunge. They have issued five studio albums, Plays the Devil's Music (1987), Paddock of Love (1988), Psychedelicatessen (1990), Forces You Don't Understand (1994) and The Great Old Ones (2003).

Tumbleweed are an Australian rock group formed in 1990 in Tarrawanna. Three of their studio albums appeared on the ARIA top 50: Tumbleweed (1992), Galactaphonic (1995), and Return to Earth (1996). Australian musicologist Ian McFarlane described the group as the "ultimate stoner's band for the 1990s. From within a post-psychedelic underground haze that evoked the spirit of 1969, [they] came on with lashings of fuzz-drenched wah wah guitar riffs, hard-driving beats, languid vocal melodies and more hair than any band had a right to possess!"

Crime & the City Solution

Crime & the City Solution are an Australian rock band formed in late 1977 by singer-songwriter and mainstay Simon Bonney. They disbanded in 1979 leaving only bootleg recordings and demos. In late 1983, Bonney travelled to London and in 1985 he formed a new version of the group in the U.K. which included members of the recently disbanded The Birthday Party; later they transferred to Berlin, where they issued four albums – Room of Lights (1986), Shine (1988), The Bride Ship (1989) and Paradise Discotheque (1990) – before disbanding again in 1991. In 2012 Bonney reformed the band in Detroit with two veterans of its Berlin era and a handful of new members.

Since We've Become Translucent is the sixth studio album by the grunge band Mudhoney, released in 2002. The album was the first to be recorded after the departure of their original bassist, Matt Lukin, three years earlier. It was also the first to be released through Sub Pop after the band returned to the label.

Feedtime is an Australian noise rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, that was initially formed as a duo in 1979 by Rick Johnson on guitar and vocals and Allen Larkin on bass guitar and vocals. They soon became a trio with various drummers until 1982, when they were joined by Tom Sturm. This line-up issued four albums, Feedtime, Shovel, Cooper-S and Suction, before disbanding in February 1989. They reunited in 1995 with Johnson and Larkin joined by the latter's younger brother, John Larkin, on drums for another album, Billy, before disbanding again in 1997. The Rick-Al-Tom line up reunited again, in 2011.

Cosmic Psychos

Cosmic Psychos are an Australian punk rock band which formed in 1982 as Spring Plains. Founding members included Ross Knight on bass guitar and vocals; Robbie Addington on guitar and vocals; and Steve Morrow on vocals. Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, described their music as "arty kind of punk noise, somewhere between The Birthday Party and a more narcotic sounding Ramones". Late in 1984 the group was renamed as Cosmic Psychos. They issued their debut album, Down on the Farm, in December 1985. Several albums have followed and were backed by national tours and international tours to Europe and North America including festivals with Mudhoney, Nirvana, L7, Helmet and Motörhead. In 1990 Jones was replaced by Robbie Watts on guitar and vocals. By 2005 Walsh was replaced by Dean Muller on drums. On 1 July 2006 Watts died of a heart attack, aged 47, and the band continued with John McKeering joining.

Ol' 55 were an Australian band specialising in retro, 1950s-era Rock 'n' Roll. They formed as Fanis in 1972 in Sutherland, Sydney. Drummer Geoff Plummer was working with Glenn A. Baker at the NSW Department of Media and invited Baker to hear his part-time band, including Patrick "Meatballs" Drummond, Rockpile Jones and Jimmy Manzie. In 1975, Baker took on their management, renamed them as Ol' 55 for the Tom Waits song, and recruited front man Frankie J. Holden and, later in the year, saxophonist Wilbur Wilde.

Bluebottle Kiss

Bluebottle Kiss, sometimes seen as BBK, were an Australian guitar-based, indie rock band formed in 1993 by mainstay, Jamie Hutchings, on guitar and vocals. They have issued six albums, Higher Up the Firetrails (1995), Fear of Girls (1996), Patient (1999), Revenge Is Slow (2002), Come Across (2003) and Doubt Seeds (2006).

The Dubrovniks were an Australian rock band which formed in August 1986 as The Adorable Ones. Early in 1987 they changed their name to The Dubrovniks in acknowledgement to the birthplace of two founding members, Roddy Radalj, and Boris Sujdovic. Dubrovnik is a town in Croatia. Both Radalj and fellow founder James Baker had previously founded Hoodoo Gurus in 1981. All three had earlier associations in the Perth punk scene of the late 1970s. The group issued four albums, Dubrovnik Blues, Audio Sonic Love Affair, Chrome, and Medicine Wheel (1994), before disbanding in 1995.

Five Dollar Bob's Mock Cooter Stew is an EP by the grunge band Mudhoney released on October 26, 1993 by Reprise Records. Mudhoney vocalist Mark Arm described this EP as a chance for the band to "get new songs out for fans in between albums."

Guy Maddison Australian musician

Guy Bernard Maddison is an Australian punk and grunge musician. From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a member of noise rock group Lubricated Goat and appeared on their album Paddock of Love. He was a member of Bloodloss (1993–97), a blues-punk band, alongside Mark Arm on vocals. From 2001 Maddison is the bass guitarist of the United States-based grunge band, Mudhoney, and has worked on their studio albums, Since We've Become Translucent (2002), Under a Billion Suns (2006), The Lucky Ones (2008), Vanishing Point (2013), and Digital Garbage (2018).

King Snake Roost Australian noise rock band

King Snake Roost were one of a number of Australian and International guitar-based bands who emerged from within the punk rock and post-punk scene of the mid-1980s that came to be defined as noise rock. King Snake Roost formed in 1985 in Adelaide and in 1987 the band moved to Sydney. The band broke up in 1990 after a two-month tour of the US. In Australia and the USA the band played with some of the most influential noise rock bands of the 1980s, including Sonic Youth, Big Black, Mudhoney, Helmet, Babes In Toyland, Lubricated Goat, feedtime and The Mark of Cain. KSR played at some prestigious 1980s US venues, including, CBGB and Maxwell's.

Mantissa were an Australian hard rock band which formed as Killing Time in 1989. Killing Time included Nina Grant on bass guitar and vocals, Chris Paine on guitar, and Adam Pringle on lead vocals. In February 1991 they issued an extended play, Ruby's Mind, which reached the Top 100 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Their Dream Alone extended play, peaked in the Top 30. Killing Time supported national tours by Jane's Addiction, Mudhoney, Scatterbrain and Baby Animals. In August 1992 Killing Time changed their name to Mantissa and followed with their debut album, Mossy God, in October on Red Eye Records / Polydor Records, which appeared in the Top 50 ARIA Albums Chart. Their second album, Thirst, appeared in August 1995 and the group disbanded in 1996.

Nunbait were an Australian punk rock band formed in 1989. They joined the thriving inner-city music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s that featured artists such as The Cosmic Psychos, Frenzal Rhomb, and Kiss My Poodles Donkey, as well as Tumbleweed and The Meanies and Nitocris. Nunbait were leaders in the second wave of punk inspired bands that followed the Black Eye Records groups, such as Thug, Lubricated Goat and Box the Jesuit.

The Lizard Train were an Australian rock band from Adelaide which formed in early 1985. They released five albums, Slippery, The Ride (1990), Get Yer Wah Wahs Out (1992), Couch (1993) and Everything Moves (1995). Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, contrasted their early work as "a melange of screaming guitars did battle over a rumbling rhythm section. Yet, beneath the distorted riffs and lyrical angst, the band boasted a melodic and harmonic sensibility usually disregarded in such aggressive music" with later work "brimming with powerful, dark songs and inspired musicianship".

The Philisteins were a garage punk band formed in Hobart in 1985 as The Cheesemongers with a line-up including; Aydn Hibberd on guitar, vocals and harmonica; and Guy Lucas on guitar, vocals and organ. In 1986 Konrad Park joined on drums and they adopted a new name, The Philisteins. In late 1986 they issued their debut album, Reverberations, and soon after relocated to Adelaide and signed with local label, Greasy Pop Records. In December 1988 they released an eight-track extended play, Bloody Convicts, Ian Wettenhall on bass guitar and Nick Bruer on drums. They followed with a six-track EP, Some Kind of Philisteins, in November 1989, with Bruer replaced by Stewart Tabert. Their full-length album, Lifestyles of the Wretched and Forgettable, appeared in November of the next year on Dog Meat Records and they had moved to Melbourne. In September 1992 they disbanded and Lucas, Tabert and Wettenhall joined ex-GOD member, Sean Greenaway in a new group, The Freeloaders. Hibberd was a founding member of indie rock band, Powder Monkeys. In March 1998 Guy Lucas died of a drug overdose. A compilation album, A Savage Affection: 1986–1992, appeared in December 2007.
