Robert Boerigter is an American sports administrator and retired commissioner for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Prior to being commissioner, Boerigter served as the athletics director for Northwest Missouri State University.

Early years

Boerigter attended Northwestern College in Iowa where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1970. Boerigter then moved to Colorado where he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a master of arts in 1974, and his Ph.D from the University of Utah in 1978. [1] In 1972, Boerigter began his 45-year career in collegiate athletics as a coach at Northwestern College in four different sports. [2]

Career

From 1972 to 1988, Boerigter had severed as athletics director at three different institutions: Adams State College, Northwestern College and Whitworth College. [3] In July 1988, Boerigter began his 13-year career at Hastings College as the athletics director. [4] While at Hastings, Boerigter more than doubled the size of student athletes, as he established four new programs: baseball, softball, women's golf, and men's and women's soccer. [5]

In May 2001, Boerigter began as the athletics director for Northwest Missouri State University. While at Northwest Missouri State, Boerigter was the leader for the then-Fall Classic at Arrowhead, and oversaw renovations to the football stadium. [6] In September 2010, it was announced that Boerigter would become the fourth Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association commissioner. [7]

While serving as commissioner of the MIAA, Boerigter oversaw conference expansion in 2012, [8] 10 schools won a national championship, [9] and brought the NCAA Division II Football Championship to Kansas City in 2014 for three seasons. [10] In May 2016, Boerigter announced he would retire on January 27, 2017, after six years as commissioner. [11]

Personal life

Boerigter has two children. His son Marc Boerigter played professional football from 2000–07, including four seasons in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2002-05. This coincided with Boerigter's time at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO, about 100 miles (160 km) north of the Kansas City. In 2015 Marc accepted a job as a color commentator for the MIAA, while his father was commissioner.

He served as the head coach at Austin College in Sherman, Texas from 1984 to 1993 and at Northwest Missouri State University from 1994 until his retirement after the 2010 season. In his 27 years as a head coach, Tjeerdsma compiled a career college football record of 242–82–4. He led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to three NCAA Division II Football Championship titles and four additional NCAA Division II titles games.

Emporia State Hornets

The Emporia State Hornets are the athletic teams that represent Emporia State University (ESU). The women's basketball and softball teams use the name Lady Hornets. The university's athletic program fields 15 varsity teams in 11 sports all of whom have combined to win 50 conference championships as well as three national championships. Corky the Hornet serves as the mascot representing the teams, and the school colors are black and gold. Emporia State participates in the NCAA Division II and has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since 1991.

Northwest Missouri State Bearcats football American college football program

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats football team has appeared in nine NCAA Division II national title games – winning six – since going 0–11 in Mel Tjeerdsma's first season in 1994. The Bearcats have made the playoffs in 20 seasons and have also won or shared 30 MIAA titles.

Northwest Missouri State−Pittsburg State football rivalry

The Northwest Missouri State−Pittsburg State football rivalry, also known as the Fall Classic at Arrowhead, is a college football game between Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) rivals Northwest Missouri State University and Pittsburg State University. From 2002 to 2013, the game was played at Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas City Chiefs. The games were played at the teams' home field, due to being unable to reach terms with the Kansas City Chiefs, from 2014 to 2018. The game is set to return to Arrowhead Stadium in 2019.

Fort Hays State Tigers

The Fort Hays State Tigers athletic teams represent Fort Hays State University. The school's teams participate in the NCAA Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), except for wrestling, which competes as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

Mike Racy

Michael Racy is an American sports executive, higher education officer and attorney. Racy currently serves as the commissioner for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Prior to being selected as the new MIAA commissioner, Racy practiced law in the Kansas City metropolitan area, served as a vice president at the University of Central Missouri, and vice president at the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
