Pemiscot County is a county located in the southeastern corner in the Bootheel in the U.S. state of Missouri,with the Mississippi River forming its eastern border. As of the 2020 census,the population was 15,661. The largest city and county seat is Caruthersville. The county was officially organized on February 19,1851. It is named for the local bayou,taken from the word pem-eskaw,meaning "liquid mud",in the language of the native Meskwaki people. This has been an area of cotton plantations and later other commodity crops.

Held on November 4,in the middle of Ronald Reagan's second presidential term,the 34 seats of Class 3 were contested in regular elections. The Republicans had to defend an unusually large number of freshman Senate incumbents who had been elected on President Ronald Reagan's coattails in 1980. Democrats won a net of eight seats,defeating seven freshman incumbents,picking up two Republican-held open seats,and regaining control of the Senate for the first time since January 1981. This remains the most recent midterm election cycle in which the sitting president's party suffered net losses while still flipping a Senate seat.

Wayne Morse would caucus with the Republicans at the start of Congress’second session on January 6,1954 to allow the GOP to remain in control of the Senate. This was the third time,as well as second consecutive,in which a sitting Senate leader lost his seat.

Sarah Steelman is an American Republican politician from Missouri and State Treasurer from 2005 to 2009. She is currently serving in the Office of Administration in Governor Mike Parson’s administration. She did not run for re-election as state treasurer in 2008,having run for governor,and was succeeded in office by Democrat Clint Zweifel on January 12,2009. She was listed in a 2008 article in the New York Times as among seventeen women who may someday run for President of the United States. On November 29,2010,Steelman announced she would run for the U.S. Senate in 2012. She was defeated in the Republican primary by U.S. Representative Todd Akin.

The 2024 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 5,2024,to elect the governor of Missouri,concurrently with the 2024 U.S. presidential election,as well as elections to the United States Senate,the United States House of Representatives,and various state and local elections. Incumbent Republican governor Mike Parson is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a second full term in office due to having served more than two years of predecessor Eric Greitens' unexpired term following his resignation in June 2018. Primary elections took place on August 6,2024. Mike Kehoe,the incumbent lieutenant governor,won the Republican nomination,while Crystal Quade,the Minority Leader of the Missouri House of Representatives,won the Democratic nomination. Kehoe defeated Quade in the general election with 59.2 percent of the vote.
