Purdue University is a public land-grant research university in West Lafayette, Indiana, and the flagship campus of the Purdue University system. The university was founded in 1869 after Lafayette businessman John Purdue donated land and money to establish a college of science, technology, and agriculture in his name. The first classes were held on September 16, 1874, with six instructors and 39 students.

As is common with athletic nicknames, the Boilermakers nickname is also used as colloquial designation of Purdue's students and alumni at large. The nickname is often shortened to "Boilers" by fans.
The Boilermaker Special is the official mascot of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. It resembles a Victorian-era railroad locomotive and is built on a truck chassis. It is operated and maintained by the student members of the Purdue Reamer Club. It is often incorrectly assumed that Purdue Pete is the official mascot of the university.

Robert Eugene Marve is a former American football quarterback who played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL). As a high school player, Marve was named Florida's Mr. Football and member of Parade All-American team as senior at Plant High School in Tampa, Florida, after breaking three state season records. Those records included passing yards (4,380), which topped 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow's marks, touchdowns (48) and completions (280). He also led the Panthers to a Class 4A state championship by completing 30 of 46 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns in the title game.

Purdue's season ended with a 37–32 victory against Western Michigan in the 2011 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

The season finished with a won-loss record of 6–7 overall, 3–5 in Big 10 Leaders Division, finishing in 4th place. The team was invited the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl, where they were defeated by Oklahoma State, 58-14.

The Boilermakers are currently led by head coach Boo De Oliveira. The team plays its home games at Bittinger Stadium located on the university's campus.
The 2015–16 Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball team represented Purdue University. Their head coach was Matt Painter, in his 11th season with the Boilers. The team played its home games in Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana and were members of the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 26–9, 12–6 in Big Ten play to finish in a four-way tie for third place. As the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, they defeated Illinois and Michigan to advance to the championship game. In a closely fought championship game, they lost to Michigan State 66–62. The Boilermakers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed, their second straight trip to the Tournament. In the First Round, they were upset by No. 12-seed Little Rock 85–83 in double overtime.
The 1903 Purdue Boilermakers football team was an American football team that represented Purdue University during the 1903 college football season. In their first season under head coach Oliver Cutts, the Boilermakers compiled a 4–2 record before 14 players were killed in a train accident on the way to a game in Indianapolis. Purdue officials canceled the game and the remainder of Purdue's schedule, leading the Boilermakers to finish in last place in the Western Conference with an 0–2 record against conference opponents, outscoring their opponents by a combined total of 87 to 48. I. S. Osborn was the team captain.
David Marshall Blough is an American football quarterback for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He was Purdue's backup quarterback in 2015 and led the Boilermakers to a win against Nebraska. As a redshirt sophomore in 2016, he started 12 games and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Blough was selected by ESPN.com as the thirty-fifth best high school quarterback. He signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent at the conclusion of the 2019 NFL Draft.
The 1990–91 Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball team represented Purdue University during the 1990–91 college basketball season. Led by head coach Gene Keady, the Boilermakers earned the #7 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament, but were defeated in the first round by Temple, finishing the season with a 17–12 record.
