The community is considered a suburb of the independent city of Richmond in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a part of the Southside neighborhoods. Originally developed as a resort, a central portion of Bon Air has been designated as a National Historic District with many structures of Victorian design from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its name means "good air," reflecting its role as a resort getaway that wealthy Richmonders enjoyed for its fresh air as opposed to the dirty air of Richmond's industrial downtown of the late 19th century.

Regarding navigation on the James River, in his Notes on the State of Virginia, written in 1781–82, then-Governor Thomas Jefferson stated "Vessels of 250 tons may go to Warwick"
Montpelier is located near the western boundary of Saint James Parish, Jamaica, approximately 10 kilometres from the parish's capital Montego Bay. The Great River which marks the boundary between Saint James Parish and Hanover Parish separated the Old Montpelier and New Montpelier plantations from Shettlewood Pen. Bon Secours - Southside Medical Center is a 300-bed hospital near the Petersburg, VA tri-cities, VA area. The hospital was originally started in 1948 by the city of Petersburg, but was sold to Community Health Systems in 2003 and relocated. Hackensack Gospel Church previously known as the First Baptist Church of Hackensack is a non-denominational church located in Hackensack, New Jersey. It is a campus of the Hawthorne Gospel Church. The campus covers a full city block of land and includes a 500-seat worship auditorium, a school offering pre-kindergarten through grade 12, a day camp, and a library. The church formerly had a bookstore and various other ministry as well. At one point the church had nearly 1,500 members.
Cristo Rey Fort Worth College Prep is a Roman Catholic high school in Fort Worth, Texas. It is a part of the Cristo Rey Network of 38 schools throughout the United States and is under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth. The first Cristo Rey School was established in 1996 in Chicago, Illinois. In conjunction with local businesses, the students' education is subsidized through the work-study model used by schools in the Cristo Rey Network, of which it is a member.
