Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST) (AMA Land Speed Grand Championship / FIM Land Speed World Records) is a motorcycle land speed racing event, held annually at Bonneville Speedway, US. The event is sanctioned by American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) [1] as the Land Speed Grand Championship and Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) as the FIM Land Speed World Records. [2] [3] [4] [5] AMA-certified US National Land Speed records, and FIM-certified Land Speed World Records are set at this event. [6] [7] The event features motorcycles ranging from 50-cc to 3000-cc, as well as electric classes. [1]
The event has been held annually since 2004 after Speed Week at the end of August prior to Labor Day.
The 2024 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, also known as the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship and FIM Land Speed World Records event, are scheduled from August 24 to August 29 at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. This annual event attracts motorcyclists aiming to set national and world speed records, featuring various classes, including electric motorcycles. It is sanctioned by both the American Motorcyclist Association and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme. [8]

17 new FIM world records and 55 AMA national records were set during the annual event 2021 BMST August 28-September 2. Notable entries include Jaron Tyner and Casper Wyoming's Tyrell Marlow who set new records on a Susuki Tl1000 and a Ducati 999 sidecar, the "Coconut Express" and Zlock racing who set three new FIM world records. [11] [12] SheEMoto award was presented to Sherry Soliz who also earned an AMA National record after breaking the ton (100MPH) on her father's BMW.
The event was cancelled due to COVID 19 pandemic risks and restrictions. [13]
50 AMA national records and 10 FIM world records [14] (pending ratification) were set during the annual event August 24-29th 2019. [15] Team Mobitec became the first traditional sit-on electric powered motorcycle to break 200 mph (320 km/h). [16]
In 2018, the annual event was held from 25 to 30 August. [7] [1] 18-year-old Cayla Rivas became the youngest female racer to reach a speed of 252.901 km/h. [2]
78-year-old Sandy Vetter, reached a speed of 100 mph (160 km/h), riding a Yamaha 350cc two-stroke motorbike. [3]
The annual event was held from 26 to 31 August. [17] Valerie Thompson became the first female driver riding a motorcycle over 300 mph (480 km/h), reaching a speed of 489.663 km/h. [18] [19]
The event was cancelled in 2015, due to rain and resulting salt flat conditions. [20]

The Bonneville Salt Flats are a densely packed salt pan in Tooele County in northwestern Utah, United States. A remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, it is the largest of many salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. It is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is known for land speed records at the Bonneville Speedway. Access to the Flats is open to the public.
Bonneville Speedway is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats northeast of Wendover, Utah, that is marked out for motor sports. It is particularly noted as the venue for numerous land speed records. The Bonneville Salt Flats Race Track is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Herbert James "Burt" Munro was a motorcycle racer from New Zealand, famous for setting an under-1,000 cc world record, at Bonneville, on 26 August 1967. This record still stands; Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record.
The Daytona 200 is an annual motorcycle road racing competition held in early spring at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The 200-mile (320 km) race was founded in 1937 when it was sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). The original course used the beach itself before moving to a paved closed circuit in 1961. The Daytona 200 reached its zenith of worldwide popularity in the 1970s when the race attracted the largest crowds of any AMA race along with some of the top rated international motorcycle racers. The race is currently promoted by MotoAmerica and run in their middleweight Supersport Class. The race is typically held in early March.

Roland Robert Free was an American motorcycle and automobile racer best known for breaking the American motorcycle land speed record in 1948 on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. A picture of Free, prone and wearing a bathing suit, has been described as the most famous picture in motorcycling.

The motorcycle land-speed record is the fastest speed achieved by a motorcycle on land. It is standardized as the speed over a course of fixed length, averaged over two runs in opposite directions. AMA National Land Speed Records requires two passes the same calendar day in opposite directions over a timed mile/kilometre while FIM Land Speed World Records require two passes in opposite directions to be over a timed mile/kilometre completed within two hours. These are special or modified motorcycles, distinct from the fastest production motorcycles. The first official FIM record was set in 1920, when Gene Walker rode an Indian on Daytona Beach at 104.12 mph (167.56 km/h). Since late 2010, the Ack Attack team has held the motorcycle land speed record at 376.36 mph (605.69 km/h).

The Vincent Black Lightning was a Vincent-HRD motorcycle first built in September 1948 at the Vincent works in Great North Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK, and produced from 1948 to 1952. The bike was a purpose-built factory modified Black Shadow that was then named and produced as the Black Lightning. At the time the Black Lightning was the fastest production motorcycle in the world.

The TOP 1 Ack Attack is a specially constructed land-speed record streamliner motorcycle that, as of March 2013, has held the record for world's fastest motorcycle since recording a two-way average speed of 605.697 km/h (376.363 mph) on September 25, 2010, in the Cook Motorsports Top Speed Shootout at Bonneville Speedway, Utah. The Ack Attack's fastest one-way speed was officially recorded at 634.217 km/h (394.084 mph). This was the third time in four years the Ack Attack had broken the motorcycle land-speed record.
Don Vesco was an American businessman and motorcycle racer who held multiple motorcycle land-speed and wheel-driven land speed records. In his lifetime, he set 18 motorcycle and 6 automobile speed records.
"Smokey'" Joe Petrali was an American motorcycle racer, active in the 1920s and 1930s. Petrali was a Class A racing champion who competed in board-track and dirt-track racing circuits, speed records, and hillclimbs. Petrali won a record 49 American Motorcyclist Association national championship races, with his last coming on August 29, 1937. The record stood for 55 years until broken by Scott Parker in 1992.

Cayla (Rivas) Kaolelopono is an American motorcycle racer based in Fresno, California, who set the FIM World Record by reaching a speed of 252.901 km/h, riding a modified Royal Enfield 650cc Twin, in 2018 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST), held at Bonneville Speedway. While setting the record on 29 August 2018, she was 18 years old. Cayla was backed up by team Royal Enfield and S&S Racing.
