Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad. With the exception of 1904 and possibly the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. sailing was always a part of the Olympic program. The Sailing program of 1984 consisted of a total of seven sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 31 July 1984 to 8 August 1984 of the coast of Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California at the Pacific Ocean. Los Angeles hosted the Olympic sailing competitions for the second time, having previously done so during the 1932 Summer Olympics. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.

Boris Anfiyanovich Shakhlin was a Soviet gymnast who was the 1960 Olympic all-around champion and the 1958 all-around World Champion. He won a total of 13 medals including seven gold medals at the Summer Olympics, and was the most successful athlete at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He held the record for most Olympic medals by a male athlete record until gymnast Nikolai Andrianov won his 14th and 15th medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics. He also won 14 medals at the World Championships.

Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction. Leonid Vladimirovich Bartenyev was a Soviet athlete who competed mainly in the 100 metres. Bartenyev was born in Poltava in October 1933. He trained at Burevestnik in Kiev. He competed for the USSR in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne in the 4 x 100 metre relay where he won the silver medal with his teammates Boris Tokarev, Yuriy Konovalov, and Vladimir Sukharev. He teamed up with Yuriy Konovalov again four years later in the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome in the 4 x 100 metre relay where they won their second silver medals with new teammates Gusman Kosanov and Edvin Ozolin.
Germany's Boris Becker and Michael Stich defeated South Africa's Wayne Ferreira and Piet Norval in the final, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–3 to win the gold medal in Men's Doubles tennis at the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was Germany's first medal in the event, though German player Friedrich Traun had been part of a mixed team that won in 1896. It was South Africa's first medal in the men's doubles since 1912. Croatia's Goran Ivanišević and Goran Prpić and Argentina's Javier Frana and Christian Miniussi won the bronze medals, which were both countries' first medals in the event.
