The Boston Society for Architecture (formerly known as the Boston Society of Architects) (BSA) is a nonprofit membership organization committed to architecture, design and the built environment. [1]
On June 20, 1867, approximately 50 architects convened in the City of Boston to sign the articles of association for the Boston Society of Architects. [2] Since this time, the BSA has grown to approximately 4,000 members, making it one of the largest branches of the AIA.
The BSA became the eastern Massachusetts regional association of the AIA in 1870. It has sister chapters in Central Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts. These three chapters constitute AIA Massachusetts. [3]
The membership of the BSA supports ArchitectureBoston Magazine, an ideas-focused publication edited by Boston Globe columnist Renée Loth; and BSA Space, a gallery for public architecture and design-related exhibitions. They convene annually at the Architecture Boston Expo convention.
The BSA is headquartered in BSA Space at 290 Congress Street, Suite 200, Boston MA 02210. [4]
The 4,000 members of the BSA include approximately 2,000 registered architects, 500 professionals on the path to become licensed architects, and other designers, architectural industry professionals, corporate affiliate members and the public. Of note is the BSA’s historic role in cultivating an inclusive membership structure within the AIA. [5]
The BSA is governed by a 23-person elected board of directors, including a president, representatives from local architectural colleges and representatives of the 40-plus committees, and maintains a staff of 20 full-time employees.
The BSA promotes and enhances the practice of architecture and design through such programs as building-industry conventions Build Boston and Residential Design and Construction, skills training, design lectures, job and college fairs, ARE study groups, Common Boston Week and more. [6]

Opened in 2011, BSA Space [7] is Boston’s leading cultural institution on architecture and design. BSA Space hosts exhibitions on design and architecture, architecture cruises and walking tours, and other programs and events that foster exchange between design and construction, the profession and the public, and encourage collaboration across the city and world.
Nestled on Boston’s waterfront between the Fort Point Channel and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, BSA Space opened in the Atlantic Wharf building in December 2011. Boston-based firm Höweler + Yoon Architecture designed the floorplan, using a concept that centers on a highly visible “cloud” ceiling and monumental stairs. These two architectural elements act as iconic markers for BSA Space and an invitation into the exhibits and meeting spaces above. The design was chosen during a 2010 design competition overseen by the BSA board of directors. Commodore Builders provided construction management services in what was a highly collaborative project.

AIA offers education, government advocacy, community redevelopment, and public outreach programs, and collaborates with other stakeholders in the design and construction industries.
The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) is an independent, nonprofit, student-run organization that offers programs, information, and resources critical to architectural education. It primarily serves about 25,000 architecture students enrolled in accredited U.S. collegiate programs each year. Recently, the AIAS has also expanded its reach to international academic programs.
The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) is an exhibition center in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It is among the largest exhibition centers in the Northeastern United States, with approximately 516,000 square feet (47,900 m2) of contiguous exhibition space. The main exhibition floor comprises three bays which can be isolated for separate shows or linked into one large space.
Architectural Record is a US-based monthly magazine dedicated to architecture and interior design. Its editor in chief is Josephine Minutillo. The Record, as it is sometimes colloquially referred to, is widely-recognized as an important historical record of the unfolding debates in architectural practice, history and criticism in the 20th-century United States. The magazine is currently published by BNP Media. Throughout its 133 years in print, Architectural Record has engaged readership among architecture, engineering, and design professionals through articles showcasing noteworthy architectural projects around the world. News, commentary, criticism, and continuing-education sections outline the scope of content. Of note are the glossy, high-quality photos of featured projects, which give the magazine wider readership outside of just those working in the design professions.
The University of Illinois School of Architecture is an academic unit within the College of Fine & Applied Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The school is organized around four Program Areas - Building Performance, Detail + Fabrication, Health + Well-being, and Urbanism. Faculty teach and conduct research in these areas in support of the School's primary objective to promote critical engagement with the design of a healthy and sustainable built environment.
Russia Wharf is a completed high-rise building in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The building rises 436 feet (133 m) and contains 32 floors. Construction began in 2006 and was finished in early 2011; as such, the structure is one of the most recently completed high-rises in the city. Russia Wharf now stands as the 35th-tallest building in the city. The architectural firm that designed the building is Childs Bertman Tseckares Inc., of Boston, Massachusetts. The civil engineer, also responsible for managing permitting was Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. of Watertown, Massachusetts. The mixed use project includes approximately 709,000 square feet (65,900 m2) of class-A commercial office space and 65 residential units. The site consists of approximately 2.2 acres (8,900 m2). From about 1897 to 2007, the site contained three low-rise mercantile buildings called the Russia, Graphic Arts, and Tufts Buildings. The office tower is being constructed on the site of the Graphic Arts and Tufts Buildings. As of 2009, Boston Properties has begun to refer to the building as Atlantic Wharf.
AIA Columbus is a chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Founded in 1913, it is one of the largest urban components of the American Institute of Architects in the Midwestern United States, with members throughout Central and Southeastern Ohio.
The Center for Architecture and Design is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Center produces educational programs related to the topics of architecture, urban planning, and design, including talks, workshops, festivals, design competitions, and exhibitions. Their venue at 1218 Arch Street serves as a public forum as well as a home for the offices of the Center, for AIA Philadelphia, and for the Community Design Collaborative. The organization was founded in 2002 by the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Slade Architecture is a New York City based architecture and design firm founded in 2002 by Hayes and James Slade. The firm has completed a diverse range of domestic and international projects. Its work has been exhibited and published widely. The Architectural League of New York selected Slade Architecture as a winner of its 2010 Emerging Voices, an annual invited competition for North American firms and individuals with distinct design voices and significant bodies of realized work. Slade Architecture was selected by the New York City Department of Design & Construction to participate in its Excellence in Design and Construction Program in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2016.
Elizabeth Whittaker is an American architect, designer and educator based in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the founder of Merge Architects in Boston and Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Andrew David Whalley is an architect registered in the United Kingdom and United States of America. His speciality is ecological design. In 2011, he was named Deputy Chairman of the international architecture firm Grimshaw Architects. He became chairman in 2019.

Andrea Leers is an American architect and educator. Together with Jane Weinzapfel, Leers created the Boston-based architecture firm Leers Weinzapfel Associates which was the first woman-owned firm to win the American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Award in 2007. In 1991, she was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.
Jane Weinzapfel is an American educator and architect. Together with Andrea Leers, Weinzapfel created the Boston-based architecture firm Leers Weinzapfel Associates which was the first woman-owned firm to win the American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Award in 2007. In 1994, she was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.
Doris Cole,, is an American architect and author. She was a founding principal of Cole and Goyette, Architects and Planners Inc. She is the author of From Tipi to Skyscraper: A History of Women in Architecture. which was the first book on women in architecture in the United States.
Eric Höweler is a Chinese-Dutch architect and designer. Höweler is an associate professor in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he teaches lecture courses and design studios with a focus on building technologies/integration since 2008. In 2004, Höweler founded Höweler+Yoon Architecture with partner Meejin Yoon.

During the middle of the 20th century, various women’s auxiliary groups were formed to support local and state chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The names of these groups were usually a variation of Women’s Architectural League (WAL) or Women’s Architectural Auxiliary (WAA) depending on the location of the chapter. WAL groups were active from 1941 through the early 1980s. Membership usually included the wives of AIA architect members and sometimes women architects. The groups were most often involved in public education, architectural scholarship fundraising, political lobbying, assisting with the hosting of national or state AIA conventions held in their home city, and hosting social events for women associated with the field of architecture.
320 Newbury Street is a six-story academic building on Newbury Street in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Since its opening in 1966, it has been the main facility for the Boston Architectural College. It was designed in the Brutalist style by Ashley, Myer & Associates.
George M. Notter was an American architect and preservationist. He is best known for his work completed while a member of the Boston firm now known as Finegold Alexander Architects between 1965 and 1992. He served as president of the American Institute of Architects for the year 1984.
