Bowring Institute is a Private members' club in Bangalore, India. It was founded in 1868 by Benjamin Lewis Rice. [1] It is named after Lewin Bentham Bowring. [2] It is best known for its tennis facilities, [2] but also has what is probably the largest library in Bangalore. [3]

History

The Bowring Institute completed 130 and 150 years in 2018 — 130 because the foundation stone of the current 12-acre property on St Mark’s Road was laid on 22 November 1888. However, the elite members-only club had an earlier avatar, which happened in 1868.[ citation needed ]

The institute was formed at a time when the industrial revolution was at its peak in Europe. [4]

It was originally a medical institution belonging to Mysore State, but in 1884 it was made over to the Civil and Military Administration. This hospital was only the Civil Medical Institution of Bangalore till 1890. It had accommodation for 104 beds, of which 80 were for men and 24 for women patients. After independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, initiated reforms to promote higher education and science and technology in India. It has parks, government offices, many educational institutions, business houses and hotels, tourist spots, shopping destinations, stadiums, museums, temples, mosques, churches, art galleries and entertainment zones.

M. Visvesvaraya Indian civil engineer, scholar, statesman and Diwan of Mysore (1860–1962)

Sir Mokshagundam VisvesvarayaFASc, more commonly known as Sir MV, was an Indian civil engineer, statesman and the 19th Diwan of Mysore, serving from 1912 to 1919. He started his primary education in Bangalore, received his BSc degree from the University of Madras, and then DCE from the University of Bombay through its affiliated institution and 3rd oldest Engineering College in Asia, College of Engineering, Pune. He received India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contributions to the public good. His birthday, 15 September, is celebrated as Engineers' Day in India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania in his memory. He was the Chief Engineer of Krishna Raja Sagara dam in the north-west suburb of Mysuru city, Laxmi Talav Dam near Kolhapur in south-west Maharashtra, and also served as one of the Chief Engineers of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad.
