Career

A UST alumni, Sablan started his career at UST Growling Tigers as an assistant coach for player academics under his former college teammate Pido Jarencio. [1] He also became an assistant coach under Leo Isaac. [2]

He became the head coach of UST in 2016. But due to two seasons of dismal performances, [3] he was later replaced by Aldin Ayo. In the middle of Sablan's tenure as head coach, some Wikipedians replaced Sablan's name into Boy Sablay (sablay means fail in Tagalog) in the UST Growling Tigers basketball page. [4]

The UST Growling Tigers basketball is the intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Santo Tomas. The school has won 19 basketball titles including one in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). They are one of the winningest teams in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) with 18 championships, the last coming in 2006 during Pido Jarencio's rookie year of coaching. Jarencio returned as the team's head coach after ten years since resigning in 2013. He formally replaced Bal David on February 3, 2023.

The 2014 UST Growling Tigers men's basketball team represented University of Santo Tomas in the 77th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. The men's basketball tournament for the school year 2014-15 began on July 12, 2014 and the host school for the season was University of the East.

Eduardo Damo Daquioag Jr. is a Filipino professional basketball player for the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). He was picked by the Meralco Bolts in the special draft of the 2016 PBA draft. He also played collegiate basketball with the UST Growling Tigers.

Henri Lorenzo P. Subido is a Filipino professional basketball player for the Zamboanga Master Sardines of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. He was drafted 24th overall by the NorthPort during the 2019 PBA draft. He played college basketball for the UST Growling Tigers of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

The 2020 UST Growling Tigers men's basketball team was scheduled to represent the University of Santo Tomas in the 83rd season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, but then the COVID-19 pandemic struck and it affected all sporting events worldwide. The rest of the UAAP tournaments in the second semester of Season 82 were discontinued and eventually terminated in April 2020. A belated opening of Season 83 was planned for January 2021, but the UAAP board eventually decided on cancelling the entire season amid the continued community quarantine measures that would affect the athletes' training and social gathering in general. This was the first time since World War II that an entire season is cancelled by the league.

The 2021 UST Growling Tigers men's basketball team represented University of Santo Tomas in the 84th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. The men's basketball tournament for the academic year 2021-22 began in the second semester on March 26, 2022, and the host school for the season was De La Salle University.

He is also a Freemason of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines.
