Brenda Pilott ONZM is a New Zealand public servant, and has advocated for greater recognition of the issue of domestic violence, fair pay, and more resources for public services. In 2021 Pilott was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to social and public service sectors.
Pilott was born in London. [1] She has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Essex University and a Diploma in Library and Information Services from University College London. [2]
Pilott worked in the domestic violence sector, and was the National Coordinator of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges. [3] This led on to a number of other roles in the public service and community and social services. She was the National Secretary of the Public Service Association for ten years, from 2004. [3] From 2016 she is National Manager of Social Service Providers Aotearoa, and is Chair of ComVoices, a social service agency collective. [4] [5] Pilott served on the council of Victoria University of Wellington from 2008 to 2012, having been appointed by the University Council after consultation with NZCTU. [2] Pilott was on the board of the United Fire Brigades’ Association, retiring from her position in 2021. During her time on the board, the UFBA and the Forest and Rural Fire Association NZ merged, and Pilott advocated successfully for the retention of the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade. [6]
Pilott has advocated for pay equity for women and social services sector workers, improved resourcing for the public services, and increased recognition of domestic violence as an issue. [1] [3] She has also advocated for no private funding of roads, and for better data privacy for users of social services. [7] [8]
Pilott lives in Wellington and volunteers for Age Concern. [9] She thinks Wellington's weather is its best feature, finding the wind "refreshing and invigorating". [1]
In the 2021 New Year Honours Pilott was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to social and public service sectors. [10]
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet is the central public service department of New Zealand, charged with providing support and advice to the governor-general, the prime minister and members of the Cabinet of New Zealand. The department is also charged with centrally leading New Zealand's "national security planning, which includes civil defence." The department's overall area of responsibility is in helping to provide, at an administrative level, the "constitutional and institutional glue" within New Zealand's parliamentary democracy. The department along with the Public Service Commission, and the Treasury constitute the central agencies or public service departments leading the state sector of New Zealand.
Iain Robert Rennie is a New Zealand economist and senior public servant. He was State Services Commissioner from 2008 to 2016 and has been Secretary to the Treasury since November 2024.
Dame Margaret Clara Bazley is a New Zealand public servant. She began her career as a psychiatric nurse and rose through the ranks to senior leadership positions at psychiatric hospitals and district health boards. In 1978 she became the Director of Nursing at the Department of Health, the chief nursing position in New Zealand and at that time the most senior position in the public service held by a woman, and in 1984 became the first female State Services Commissioner. She subsequently held top positions at the Department of Transport and the Department of Social Welfare.
Dame Temuranga Batley-Jackson, known as June Jackson, was a New Zealand community worker and public servant.
Kennie Tsui is a New Zealand chemical and environmental engineer. In July 2021, she was appointed chief executive of the New Zealand Geothermal Association. In December 2024, she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the environment and governance.
Frances Anne Hughes is a New Zealand nursing academic and leader, and has held senior roles across several nursing organisations. In 2005 Hughes was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the mental health profession. In 2020 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to nursing and mental health.
Megan Faye Tamati-Quennell is a New Zealand curator. In 2024 Tamati-Quennell was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori and First Nations art.
Deborah Kennedy Gilbertson is a New Zealand entrepreneurship academic and educational consultant. In 2023, Gilbertson was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business, science and technology. Her Global Enterprise Experience contest was awarded a United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Award, and Gilbertson was awarded an honorary degree by Lincoln University in 2024.
Stacey Victoria Mendonca is a New Zealand quantity surveyor and estimator. Mendonca co-founded the New Zealand chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction in 1996. In 2023 Mendonca was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to women.
Mairehe Louise Marie Tankersley is a New Zealand social worker. In 2021, Tankersley was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to prisoners' welfare and Māori.
Sylvia Margarite Piera McArthur is a New Zealand painter. In 2012 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the arts.
Jacqueline Grant is a New Zealand local politician, foster parent and museum owner. She was a Grey District Councillor between 1998 and 2004, and founded the Sock World museum in Hokitika. In 1998, Grant was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the community, and 20 years later she was promoted to Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, also for services to the community.
Tere Ngawai Gilbert is a New Zealand early childhood educator and advocate for the te reo Māori language. In 2024 Gilbert was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to early childhood and Māori language education.
Mary Jane Rivers is a New Zealand community development leader. In 2024 Rivers was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to community-led development, governance and education.
Margaret Alison Nielsen was a New Zealand pianist, music teacher and academic. In 2005 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music.
Roma Cherry Balzer is a New Zealand family violence prevention advocate. She has worked in family violence prevention for more than forty years. In 2005 Balzer was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for her services to families and the community. In 2019 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to services to family violence prevention.
Marion Anne Frater is a New Zealand judge. She is Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Parole Board. In 2017, Frater was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the judiciary.
Janet May Hesketh was a New Zealand women's leader. In 1988 she was awarded the Queen's Service Medal, and in 1996 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the National Council of Women (NCWNZ).
Jane Christine Huria is a New Zealand company director. She is Professor of Practice – Business and Governance at the University of Canterbury. In 2012 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to corporate governance, and in 2024 she was elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
Jane Mary "Molly" Atkinson was a New Zealand singer and singing teacher. She was one of the first professional full-time classical singers in New Zealand. In 1996, she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to music.
