Brent Ellis Dickson [1] (born July 18,1941) is an American attorney and jurist who served as a justice of the Indiana Supreme Court from January 6,1986 to April 29,2016,and was chief justice of the Court from 2012 to 2014. Born in Hobart,Indiana,Dickson earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1964 and a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1968. [3] During law school,Dickson attended evening courses while working full-time as an insurance claims adjuster. [7]
He practiced law in Lafayette from 1968 to 1985 and became the senior partner in the law firm of Dickson,Reiling,Teder &Withered. He was appointed by Governor Robert D. Orr to replace retiring Indiana Supreme Court Justice Dixon Prentice. The appointment began January 6,1986,and he was retained by election in 1988. [7]

Robert French Utter was an American attorney and jurist from Washington. He served as a King County Superior Court judge from 1964 until his appointment to the Washington Court of Appeals in 1968. In 1971 he was appointed to the Washington Supreme Court, where he served for 23 years, including two years as the chief justice. Utter is known for his opposition to the death penalty. He dissented in two dozen cases on capital punishment while on the court and resigned in 1995 in protest of it. After resigning from the court, Utter taught the first state constitutional law course in Washington State at the University of Puget Sound School of Law and traveled around the world to help developing nations create independent judiciaries. He died in 2014.
