Brent Avis Hardcastle Palfreyman (born 20 January 1945 in Hobart) is a former Australian first-class cricketer who played for Tasmania.
Palfreyman never played Sheffield Shield cricket,his six first-class appearances all came against foreign touring sides. On his first-class debut against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1966,Palfreyman was bowled by David Brown for six and didn't bat in the second innings. He also went for 34 from four overs of medium pace bowling in the first innings and took a catch to dismiss David Allen . [1]
He had to wait another five years to represent Tasmania again at first-class level and it was once more against the touring MCC. In the first of two matches,he fell victim to Peter Lever then Derek Underwood,for 3 and 20 respectively. [2] His second appearance was for a Tasmania Combined XI but the match was ruined by rain and only 47 overs were possible,although he managed to catch to dismiss Colin Cowdrey. [3]
The following summer he was picked in the Tasmanian team to play the World XI. Against a bowling line-up consisting of players to the calibre of Gary Sobers,Tony Greig and Bishan Bedi,Palfreyman made his highest first-class score of 30 before being dismissed by the Indian spinner. [4] Later in the week he made another appearance against the World XI,this time for the Combined Tasmanian outfit and he made 22 in his only innings. [5]
His last summer of first-class cricket was in 1972/73 when he represented Tasmania against Pakistan. The Tasmanians bowled first and Palfreyman went for 41 runs off his seven overs but threw the ball which ran out Talat Ali. When it was his turn to bat,Palfreyman was dismissed by Intikhab Alam for a duck,with the Pakistani finishing with his career best figures of 8-54. After Tasmania followed on,Palfreyman yet again lost his wicket to a spin bowler,this time Nasim-ul-Ghani for one run. [6]
In addition to his first-class career,Palfreyman played two limited overs matches for Tasmania in the national One Day Competition,both quarter finals which Tasmania lost. [7]
At the 1992 Cricket World Cup,Palfreyman was the match referee for a match between Australia and Zimbabwe in Hobart. [8]
Palfreyman was also a successful Australian rules footballer,who played in the Tasmanian Football League for Sandy Bay. A forward,he was the TFL leading goal-kicker in 1969 with 51 goals and again in 1970 with 67 goals. He was a member of the 1971 Sandy Bay premiership team which in 2007 was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame. His brother,Stewart Palfreyman,played for Geelong. [9]
Palfreyman,an accountant,went into cricket administration after ending his playing career and has served as the chairman of the Tasmanian Cricket Association. [10]
David Clarence Boon is an Australian cricket match referee,former cricket commentator and international cricketer whose international playing career spanned the years 1984–1996. A right-handed batsman and a very occasional off-spin bowler,he played first-class cricket for both his home state Tasmania and English county side Durham.
Donald Bryce Carr OBE was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1946 to 1967,for Oxford University from 1948 to 1951,and twice for England in 1951/52. He captained Derbyshire between 1955 and 1962,and scored over 10,000 runs for the county.
Joseph Darling was an Australian cricketer who played 34 Test matches as a specialist batsman between 1894 and 1905. As captain,he led Australia in a total of 21 Tests,winning seven and losing four. Robert William Taylor is an English former cricketer who played as wicket-keeper for Derbyshire between 1961 and 1984 and for England between 1971 and 1984. He made 57 Test,and 639 first-class cricket appearances in total,taking 1,473 catches. The 2,069 victims across his entire career is the most of any wicket-keeper in first-class history. He is considered one of the world's most accomplished wicket-keepers. He made his first-class debut for Minor Counties against South Africa in 1960,having made his Staffordshire debut in 1958. He became Derbyshire's first choice wicket-keeper when George Dawkes sustained a career-ending injury. His final First Class appearance was at the Scarborough Festival in 1988. He remained first choice until his retirement except for a short period in 1964 when Laurie Johnson was tried as a batsman-wicketkeeper.

An English cricket team,under the auspices of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC),toured Australia from October to December 1935 before going to New Zealand for a three-month tour. It played first-class matches against each of the five mainland state teams,and one match against an Australian XI.
On 11 and 12 February 1851,teams from Van Diemen's Land and Port Phillip District played the first cricket match between two Australian colonies,recognised in later years as the inaugural first-class cricket match in Australia.
