Brian Egolf [1] (born September 10,1976) is an American attorney and politician who served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. He has also served as speaker of the House between 2017 and 2023.
Egolf was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Santa Fe,New Mexico. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law. [2]
In the 2017 legislative session,Egolf served on the Judiciary,Rules and Order of Business,and Taxation &Revenue Committees. [3]
Egolf championed equal pay for equal work for the women of New Mexico, [4] reduced government corruption through the creation of the New Mexico State Ethics Commission, [5] and passed legislation to penalize the distribution of sensitive images,such as child pornography. [6] As a private practice attorney,Egolf filed suit in New Mexico district court on behalf of a gay couple that was denied a marriage license. [7] [8]
Egolf was considered a potential congressional candidate for the United States House of Representatives in the 2014 election against incumbent Republican Steve Pearce. [9]

Stevan Edward Pearce is an American businessman and politician who served as the U.S. representative for New Mexico's 2nd congressional district from 2003 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2019. He is a member of the Republican Party and was his party's unsuccessful nominee in the 2018 New Mexico gubernatorial election. On December 8,2018,Pearce was elected Chair of the New Mexico Republican Party,replacing Ryan Cangiolosi. He was re-elected in December 2020.
The 2008 United States Senate election in New Mexico was held on November 4,2008 coinciding with the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Pete Domenici decided to retire instead of seeking a seventh term. All three of New Mexico's U.S. Representatives retired from the House to run in this election,which was the first open Senate seat in the state since 1972 where Domenici first elected on this seat. Pearce narrowly defeated Wilson in the Republican primary,but Udall won the general election after an uncontested Democratic primary.

Same-sex marriage in New Mexico became legally recognized statewide through a ruling of the New Mexico Supreme Court on December 19,2013,requiring county clerks to issue marriage licenses to all qualified couples regardless of gender. Until then,same-sex couples could only obtain marriage licenses in certain counties of the state. Eight of the 33 counties,covering 58% of the state's population,had begun issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in August and September 2013. New Mexico's marriage statute was not specific as to gender,and it was the only state lacking a state statute or constitutional provision explicitly addressing same-sex marriage. Lacking a state law or judicial ruling concerning same-sex marriage prior to December 19,2013,policy for the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples was determined at the county level at the discretion of local issuing authorities i.e.,some counties recognized same-sex marriage and issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples,while others did not.

Additionally,conversion therapy on minors is prohibited in the state.
