The 2020–21 Japan Figure Skating Championships were held in Nagano, Nagano from December 23–27, 2020. It was the 89th edition of the event. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, and ice dance. The results were part of the Japanese selection criteria for the 2021 World Championships.

The 2022 World Figure Skating Championships were held in Montpellier, France, from March 21–27, 2022. The 2022–23 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating was a series of senior international competitions organized by the International Skating Union that were held from October 2022 through December 2022. Skaters earned points based on their placements at each event and the top six in each discipline qualified to compete at the Grand Prix Final in Turin, Italy.
