Brian Shay (born February 22, 1977) is a former American football running back, who played for the Emporia State Hornets from 1995 to 1998. While at Emporia State, Shay broke various NCAA records and was the Harlon Hill Trophy winner in 1998. Shay is one of the all-time rushing leaders in the NCAA Division II. [1]

Early life

Shay attended Paola High School where he lettered in football and wrestling. While at Paola High, he helped lead the school's football team to go undefeated and win the Class 4A state football championship in 1994. Shay also won state in wrestling twice. [2]

College career

While at Emporia State, Shay broke many records at ESU, in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the NCAA. [3] During his four years, he was a three-time Division II All-America pick, and finished his career with six NCAA records including 6,958 rushing yards, 15 200-yard rushing games, 9,301 all-purpose yards, 88 total touchdowns, 81 rushing touchdowns and 544 total points. [4] When Shay finished his senior year at ESU, he had broken 17 Division II records having averaged more rushing yards per game as a senior in 1998 and a few thousand yards rushing over his final three years. [5]

Shay had 1,207 yards in punt returns, as well as 104 yards on kickoff returns. [6] Shay was the 1998 Harlon Hill Trophy winner, which is the Heisman Trophy for Division II, and finished second for the same award in 1997 as a junior. [7] As a senior, he ran for an ESU and MIAA record 2,265 yards with 29 rushing touchdowns. Shay finished college as one of the all-time leading rushers in college football history. [8] [9]

Professional career

After college, Shay became an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1999 but later re-signed to spend five weeks on the practice squad in 2000. [10] Shay then went on to play with the Berlin Thunder, a team in the NFL Europe league. Shay was the starting running back for the Thunder, finishing 3rd in the league. [11]

George McLaren (American football)

George W. "Tank" McLaren was an American football and basketball player and coach. Playing at the University of Pittsburgh under legendary football coach Pop Warner, McLaren was an All-American in 1917 and 1918. During his playing career, he was never stopped for a loss on a running play. McLaren served as head football coach at Emporia State University, then known as Kansas State Normal College, (1919), the University of Arkansas (1920–1921), the University of Cincinnati (1922–1926), and the University of Wyoming (1927–1929), compiling a career record of 32–55–8. He also coached basketball at Wyoming for two seasons (1928–1930), tallying a mark of 28–10. McLaren was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1965.

Germaine Race is a former American football running back. He was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He played college football at Pittsburg State earning All American honors three times. Race played professionally in Austrian Football League in 2010.

Garin Higgins American football coach and former player

Garin Higgins is an American football college coach and former player. Higgins is the head football coach at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, a position he has held since the 2007 season. Higgins previously served as the head football coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University from 2000 to 2004. His Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers finished as runners-up in the NAIA Football National Championship in 2000 and 2003. Higgins worked as co-offensive coordinator at Minnesota State University, Mankato and offensive coordinator at Northeastern State University in 2006.

David Wiemers is an American football coach. He was the assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at Pittsburg State University from 2011 to 2019. Wiemers served as the head football coach at Emporia State University from 2001 to 2006, compiling a record of 35–32.

Emporia State Hornets

The Emporia State Hornets are the athletic teams that represent Emporia State University (ESU). The women's basketball and softball teams use the name Lady Hornets. The university's athletic program fields 15 varsity teams in 11 sports all of whom have combined to win 50 conference championships as well as three national championships. Corky the Hornet serves as the mascot representing the teams, and the school colors are black and gold. Emporia State participates in the NCAA Division II and has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since 1991.

The Emporia State Hornets football program is a college football team that represents Emporia State University, often referred to as "Emporia State" or "ESU". The team competes as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), which is a conference in the Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The program began in 1897 and has fifteen conference titles. On December 15, 2006, former Hornet quarterback Garin Higgins became the team's 24th head coach, following the resignation of Dave Wiemers. Home games are played on Jones Field at Welch Stadium, located on the Emporia State University campus in Emporia, Kansas. In August 2017, Hero Sports named Emporia State the "best football team in Kansas, regardless of division."

The Emporia State Lady Hornets basketball team represents Emporia State University and competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) of the NCAA Division II. On April 6, 2018, Toby Wynn was announced as the seventh head coach, replacing Jory Collins who left to join former Lady Hornet coach Brandon Schneider at the University of Kansas.

Jory Michael Collins is an American women's college basketball coach currently serving as the head coach for the North Dakota State program. From 2010 until 2018, Collins was the head coach at Emporia State University. Collins led the Emporia State Lady Hornets to eight consecutive winning seasons. Collins is the second winningest coach in Emporia State history with a record of 199–58 (.774).

Brandon Schneider is an American college women's basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Schneider was previously the head coach, from 2010 to 2015, for Stephen F. Austin State University, and from 1998 to 2010 at Emporia State University, an NCAA Division II school located in Emporia, Kansas, where he led the team to the 2010 National Championship.

Bob Fornelli

Robert William Fornelli is an American college baseball coach and current head baseball coach at Pittsburg State University. Previously, Fornelli coached at his alma mater Emporia State University from 2004 to 2018 where he guided the Hornets to five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season championships and two conference tournament championships, 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament, two World Series appearances and a national runner-up finish. Fornelli was the coach at Fort Hays State from 1996 to 2003.

Emporia State–Washburn football rivalry American college football rivalry

The Emporia State–Washburn football rivalry, commonly referred to as the Turnpike Tussle, is an American college football rivalry game played annually between the Emporia State Hornets football team of Emporia State University from Emporia, Kansas, and the Washburn Ichabods football team of Washburn University from Topeka, Kansas. Both schools currently compete in the NCAA Division II level, and are members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Emporia State currently leads the series 58–53–2. The Turnpike Tussle is the second-oldest active NCAA Division II rivalry.
