NVC community W13 (Taxus baccata woodland), also known as Yew woodland, is one of the woodland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system; it is the only Yew woodland community in the NVC.
This is a very localised community. There are two subcommunities:
Only one constant species is found in this community, Yew (Taxus baccata).
A single rare species, European Box (Buxus sempervirens) is also associated with the community.
This community is almost wholly confined to chalk sites on the North and South Downs in southern England.
There are two subcommunities:
Taxus is a genus of coniferous trees or shrubs known as yews in the family Taxaceae. They are relatively slow-growing and can be very long-lived, and reach heights of 2.5–20 metres (8.2–65.6 ft), with trunk girth averaging 5 metres (16 ft). They have reddish bark, lanceolate, flat, dark-green leaves 10–40 millimetres long and 2–3 mm broad, arranged spirally on the stem, but with the leaf bases twisted to align the leaves in two flat rows either side of the stem. The oldest known fossil species are from the Early Cretaceous.
Taxus baccata is a species of evergreen tree in the family Taxaceae, native to western, central and southern Europe, northwest Africa, northern Iran, and southwest Asia. It is the tree originally known as yew, though with other related trees becoming known, it may now be known as common yew, English yew, or European yew. It is primarily grown as an ornamental. Most parts of the plant are poisonous, with toxins that can be absorbed through inhalation and through the skin; consumption of even a small amount of the foliage can result in death.
NVC community SD11 is one of the 16 sand-dune communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
NVC community M20 is one of the mire communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
NVC community H3 is one of the heath communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. It is one of three communities which are considered transitional between the lowland dry heaths and the wetter communities classified in the NVC as mires.
British NVC community MG12 is one of the mesotrophic grassland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. It is one of three types of mesotrophic grassland classified as grass-dominated inundation communities.
NVC community SD18 is one of the 16 sand-dune communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
NVC community SD1 is the only shingle community in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
NVC community W1 is one of the woodland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system; it is one of seven woodland communities in the NVC classed as "wet woodlands".

NVC community W3 is one of the woodland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
NVC community H5 is one of the heath communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. It is one of three communities which are considered transitional between the lowland dry heaths and the wetter communities classified in the NVC as mires.
NVC community SD12 is one of the 16 sand-dune communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system.
British NVC community MG11 is one of the mesotrophic grassland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. It is one of three types of mesotrophic grassland classified as grass-dominated inundation communities.
NVC community W8 is one of the woodland communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. It is one of the six communities falling in the "mixed deciduous and oak/birch woodlands" group.
