The British Sledge Hockey Association (BSHA) is the national governing body in the United Kingdom for ice sledge hockey. [1] Formed in 1995, its main objectives are to expand the number of teams active in the UK (and by association the number or participants) and to develop the national team.

Contents

As of the 2015–16 season, there are five teams that compete in the BSHA League: Cardiff Huskies, Kingston Kestrels, Manchester Phoenix, Sheffield Steelkings and Peterborough Phantoms. A new team, the Endeavour Eagles is joining the league for the 2017 season, based out of Basingstoke. This new team will consist primarily of military personnel, most of whom were injured or disabled in the line of duty.

Great Britain National Team

The BSHA oversees the GB National Sledge Hockey Team. The team currently competes in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships B Pool and hopes to qualify to attend the 2018 Winter Paralympics in South Korea.

Manchester Phoenix was a semi professional ice hockey team from Greater Manchester, England. The club was formed in 2003 as a result of the efforts of supporters group Friends of Manchester Ice Hockey to bring top-level ice hockey back to Manchester after Manchester Storm folded in 2002.

The Milton Keynes Lightning are an ice hockey team founded in 2002 and then again in 2019 in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. The Lightning previously turned up in the top tier Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) from 2017–2019, and the tier-3/tier-2 English Premier Ice Hockey League (EPIHL) from 2002–2017. Women's ice hockey in Great Britain is administered by the English and Scottish Ice Hockey Associations. It is one of the fastest growing areas of the game.

The British League was the top-flight ice hockey league in the United Kingdom from 1982 until 1996, when it was replaced by the Ice Hockey Superleague and the British National League. Note that the league never had 'hockey' in its title. The league replaced three regional leagues: the Inter-City League in southern England, the English League North in northern England and the Northern League in Scotland and NE England.

The Peterborough Phantoms are a British ice hockey team that play at the Planet Ice Peterborough Arena, in Bretton, Peterborough. The Peterborough Phantoms ice hockey club was founded in 2002. It replaced the former city based team, the Peterborough Pirates, and plays in the same arena. The team currently competes in the semi-professional National Ice Hockey League, the second tier in British ice hockey below the fully professional Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). They previously played in the English Premier Ice Hockey League (EPIHL).

The Cardiff Huskies are a sledge hockey team based in Cardiff, Wales. The team was started by Andy McNulty and David "Jamo" James. The team is believed to be the oldest sledge hockey team in the UK. The Cardiff Huskies is the only sledge hockey team in Wales. The team is part of the BSHA (British Sledge Hockey Association).

The 2004–05 Elite Ice Hockey League season was the second season of the British Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Manchester Phoenix did not ice due as they could not agree a deal with the Manchester Evening News Arena.

The 1998–99 Ice Hockey Superleague season was the third season of the Ice Hockey Superleague (ISL). Having reached a sponsorship deal with Sekonda, the league was now formally known as the Sekonda Ice Hockey Superleague.

The 1999–2000 Ice Hockey Superleague season was the fourth season of the Sekonda Ice Hockey Superleague (ISL).

The Cardiff Devils are a Welsh professional ice hockey team who play in the British Elite Ice Hockey League. The team plays at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay, currently known as Vindico Arena for sponsorship reasons.

Matthew Lloyd is a British Paralympian who was born with spina bifida and two club feet. He has competed in ice sledge hockey at the 2006 Winter Paralympics, in Sitting volleyball at the 2007 European Championships, and is credited with inventing the sport of Inline sledge hockey. He was born in Crawley, Sussex but grew up in Rainhill, Merseyside and later resided in Hollym, East Riding of Yorkshire. After completing a degree in Business Information Systems, Lloyd worked within the music industry, firstly as a journalist and then within the A&R department of a major record label, before going to work extensively within the sports and leisure sectors.

Luke Ferrara is a British ice hockey player who currently plays for UK NIHL side Peterborough Phantoms. A member of the British national team, Ferrara previously played with the Cardiff Devils, Sheffield Steelers, Coventry Blaze and Nottingham Panthers.
