The Cardiff Huskies are a sledge hockey team based in Cardiff, Wales. The team was founded by Andy McNulty and David "Jamo" James[ citation needed ] in 1996. [1] The team is believed to be the oldest sledge hockey team in the UK. [2] The Cardiff Huskies is the only sledge hockey team in Wales. [3] The team is part of the BSHA (British Sledge Hockey Association).

Cardiff Huskies is an inclusive mixed gender team, accepting both children & adults members. They accept people with a range of abilities, and are inclusive to those without disabilities. [4] [5] The Huskies is one of the main teams that help raise awareness of sledge hockey in the British Isles, as a way of getting more players and more teams created. Peterborough Phantoms is another team that advertises sledge hockey in the British Isles.

The Cardiff Huskies used to train in the Wales National Ice Rink. Demolished in 2006 to build the St. David's 2 shopping centre, and specifically the John Lewis department store, they now play and train at Ice Arena Wales, Cardiff Bay, which is also home to the Cardiff Devils.

In 2018 they won the British Para Ice Hockey League. [6] They have also achieved league titles in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Sledge hockey, also known as Sled hockey in American English, and Para ice hockey in international competition, is an adaptation of ice hockey for players who have a physical disability. The sport was invented in the early 1960s at a rehabilitation centre in Stockholm, Sweden, and played under similar rules to standard ice hockey. Players are seated on sleds and use special hockey sticks with metal "teeth" on the tips of their handles to navigate the ice. Playing venues use an ice hockey rink.

Matthew Lloyd is a British Paralympian who was born with spina bifida and two club feet. He has competed in ice sledge hockey at the 2006 Winter Paralympics, in Sitting volleyball at the 2007 European Championships, and is credited with inventing the sport of Inline sledge hockey. He was born in Crawley, Sussex but grew up in Rainhill, Merseyside and later resided in Hollym, East Riding of Yorkshire. After completing a degree in Business Information Systems, Lloyd worked within the music industry, firstly as a journalist and then within the A&R department of a major record label, before going to work extensively within the sports and leisure sectors.

Nathan Stephens is a Welsh former Paralympian athlete competing mainly in category F57–58 throwing events. He was until September 2012 the world record holder in the F57 javelin throw.

The British Sledge Hockey Association (BSHA) is the national governing body in the United Kingdom for ice sledge hockey. Formed in 1995, its main objectives are to expand the number of teams active in the UK and to develop the national team.

Ice Arena Wales is an ice hockey rink in the Cardiff International Sports Village in Cardiff, Wales. It opened on 12 March 2016, and had two ice rinks and seating for 3,088 spectators. The ice rink currently only has the use of one rink, with the smaller public pad leased out by Cardiff Council to Sayers.

Stephen Thomas is a British Paralympic sailor. Thomas has represented Great Britain at three Summer Paralympics and with his colleagues John Robertson and Hannah Stodel has won multiple medals in the Mixed Sonar class at the Disabled Sailing World Championships, including gold in 2005 and 2006.

The 2016–17 Elite Ice Hockey League season was the 14th season of the Elite Ice Hockey League. The regular season begun in early September and ended in March. Regular season champion Cardiff Devils were defeated in the playoff final by their Erhardt Conference rivals Sheffield Steelers 6–5 in double-overtime.

The 2017–18 EIHL season was the 15th season of the Elite Ice Hockey League. The regular season commenced on 9 September 2017 and ended on 25 March 2018. The reigning league champions were the Cardiff Devils, who won the championship for the first time in 2016–17. The Devils retained their regular season title, with a 3–2 victory away at the Belfast Giants on 16 March 2018. The Devils also won the playoff title, beating the Sheffield Steelers – who had defeated the Devils 12 months prior in a 6–5 double overtime game – 3–1 in the final, winning a first playoff title since 1998–99.

The China national para ice hockey team, established in 2017, represents the People's Republic of China in international sledge hockey competitions and is governed by the Winter Sports Management Center of the State Sports General Administration of China (国家体育总局冬季运动管理中心).

Adam Kingsmill is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. He competed at the 2022 Winter Paralympics in para ice hockey, winning a silver medal. Kingsmill also won a gold medal at the 2024 World Para Ice Hockey Championships.
