Hampstead is an area in London, England, which lies four miles northwest of Charing Cross, and extends from the A5 road to Hampstead Heath, a large, hilly expanse of parkland. The area forms the northwest part of the London Borough of Camden, a borough in Inner London which for the purposes of the London Plan is designated as part of Central London.
West Hampstead is an area in the London Borough of Camden in north-west London. Mainly defined by the railway stations of the same name, it is situated between Childs Hill to the north, Frognal and Hampstead to the north-east, Swiss Cottage to the east, South Hampstead to the south-east, Kilburn to the west and south-west, and Cricklewood to the north-west. The area is mainly residential with several small shops, restaurants, cafes, bakeries concentrated on the northern section of West End Lane and around West End Green. It is served by three stations: West Hampstead on the Jubilee line, West Hampstead Overground station and West Hampstead Thameslink station. It is part of the Kilburn postal district (NW6).
South Hampstead is an affluent part of the London Borough of Camden in inner north London. It is commonly defined as the area between West End Lane in the west, the Chiltern Main Line (south), Broadhurst Gardens north and north-west followed by a non-road line demarcating the south slopes of Hampstead village, west of Belsize Park, and north and west of the usually narrowly defined Swiss Cottage neighbourhood. It takes in some of Fitzjohns Avenue leading up to "the village", but the exact amount is an arbitrary measure. The streets were laid out in the Victorian era. The area was not served by any railways until Loudoun Road station opened in 1879 on the street of that name.
West End Lane is a street in inner north-west London, England that runs for about one mile between Kilburn High Road to the south and Finchley Road to the north. Located in the London Borough of Camden, and the NW6 postal district, the street winds through West Hampstead with a mix of residential and commercial buildings. The three West Hampstead stations are all located on the road at the centre of the district of that name. In the north-east it today becomes Frognal Lane, although this stretch was once included as part of West End Lane. It also marks the western boundary of South Hampstead. It is not connected to the West End of Central London, which is around three miles to the south-east.
Belsize Park Gardens is a street in the Belsize Park area of Hampstead in London. Located in the London Borough of Camden, it is residential street featuring white stucco Victorian era buildings. It runs roughly southeastwards from Belsize Avenue in Belsize Village before terminating at a junction with Eton Avenue, England's Lane and Primrose Hill Road. The Grade II listed pub The Washington, dating from around 1865, is located at its eastern end.
Well Walk is a street in Hampstead, England in the London Borough of Camden. It runs southwestwards from Hampstead Heath to Flask Walk which then continues on towards the centre of Hampstead Village around the Hampstead tube station. It takes its name from the historic Hampstead Wells.
Eton Avenue is a street in the Belsize Park area of Hampstead in North London. Located in the London Borough of Camden, it runs eastward from Swiss Cottage tube station to a junction with England's Lane, Primrose Hill Road and Belsize Park Gardens by The Washington pub. Fellows Road and Adelaide Road run parallel to the south of Eton Avenue.
Well Road is a street in Hampstead, England in the London Borough of Camden. It runs westwards from Hampstead Heath to New End Square. Well Walk runs parallel to its south and the two are linked by Wells Passage. When the Hampstead Wells were in existence, a large pump room and assembly room were located on Well Walk, with the water supplied from the headspring on Well Road.
Pond Street is located in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden. It runs eastwards from Rosslyn Hill to South End Green, located in the old "South End" of the settlement. The street takes its name from an ancient pond at South End Green, a source of the River Fleet, and has been known by this name since at least 1678. The pond survived into the Victorian era.
North End Way is a street in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden, today a stretch of the A502 road. At the boundary with the London Borough of Barnet it becomes North End Road running northwards into Golders Green where it terminates at the junction with Finchley Road, by the tube station. North End Way passes through Hampstead Heath.
Heath Street is in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden, part of the A502 road for much of its route. It runs from the centre of Hampstead Village northwards towards Hampstead Heath. By Jack Straw's Castle it divides into North End Way heading towards North End and Spaniards Road heading towards Hampstead Garden Suburb and Highgate via Hampstead Lane. Streets running off it include Church Row, New End, Holly Hill, Hampstead Grove and Hampstead Square.
Spaniards Road is a street in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden. It runs northwards from the junction of Heath Street and North End Way, close to the Hampstead War Memorial and Jack Straw's Castle, cutting through Hampstead Heath before becoming Hampstead Lane which then turns eastwards towards Highgate. It is designated part of the B519 Road.
South End Road is located in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden. It takes its name from the old "South End" of Hampstead. It runs southwards from the junction with East Heath Road and Downshire Hill alongside the southern edge of Hampstead Heath until reaching South End Green where it meets Pond Street and two roads running off east towards Gospel Oak. South Hill Park street runs north towards Hampstead Ponds. Keats Grove runs off the road and forms a triangle with Downshire Hill noted for its surviving Regency architecture.
Loudoun Road is a street in the St John's Wood area of London. Most of its route is in the City of Westminster, but it crosses into the London Borough of Camden at its northern end in South Hampstead. It runs roughly parallel to Finchley Road to its east while Abbey Road, London is to the west. It runs north from Grove End Road, not far from St John's Wood tube station, and crosses or is joined by a number of streets including Marlborough Place, Carlton Hill and Boundary Road. It finishes at a roundabout junction with several streets including Belsize Road and Fairhazel Gardens. South Hampstead railway station is at the northern end of the street.
Adelaide Road is a street in London running east to west between Chalk Farm and Swiss Cottage. Located in the London Borough of Camden it is part of the longer B509 route which continues as Belsize Road through South Hampstead. The Belsize Park area of Hampstead is to its north while Primrose Hill is to the south. It runs parallel to Fellows Road and Eton Avenue. Along its route it meets or is crossed by several streets including Primrose Hill Road and Avenue Road. At its eastern end is Chalk Farm tube station at the junction with Haverstock Hill, which opened in 1907. It takes its name from Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV.
Primrose Hill Road is a street located in the London Borough of Camden. Running off Regent's Park Road in the centre of the Primrose Hill area it heads west before curving northwards, following for some of its route alongside the edge of Primrose Hill. After crossing Adelaide Road it terminates next to The Washington pub in Belsize Park, at a junction with Eton Avenue, England's Lane and Belsize Park Gardens. Primrose Hill Tunnel carrying the West Coast Main Line passes underneath the street.
Priory Road is a street in Kilburn. Located in the London Borough of Camden it runs northwards from Belsize Road through South Hampstead crossing several streets including Abbey Road before finishing at a junction with Broadhurst Gardens, not far from West Hampstead tube station. It takes its name from the old Kilburn Priory located in the area until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII.
Branch Hill is a street in Hampstead. Located in the London Borough of Camden it is named after a hill on Hampstead Heath and runs adjacent to the heath between Frognal Rise and West Heath Road. Branch Hill, then largely open countryside, was a favourite landscape of the artist John Constable and he painted it on a number of occasions. Branch Hill Pond is located close to the junction with West Heath Road, while it dried up in the early twentieth century recent efforts have been made to restore it.
Belsize Road is a street in the London Borough of Camden. It runs west to east from Kilburn High Road to close to Finchley Road in the Swiss Cottage area of Hampstead. It is part of the B509 route which continues eastwards as Adelaide Road to Chalk Farm tube station. Despite its name it is located to the west of Belsize Park in the South Hampstead area. Much of its route runs parallel to the Midland Main Line and Kilburn High Road station is at its eastern end. It meets a number of streets including Loudoun Road, Abbey Road and Priory Road.
Fitzjohns Avenue is a street in Hampstead, England. Located in the London Borough of Camden it runs northwards from College Crescent to join and become Heath Street in Hampstead Village. Running steeply uphill for much of its route Fitzjohns Avenue is joined or crossed by various other streets including Belsize Park, Belsize Lane, Maresfield Gardens, Netherhall Gardens, Akenfield Road and Lyndhurst Road. It is classified as part of the B511 road. It is also sometimes written as Fitzjohn's Avenue.
