The Bronze Medallion is the highest award conferred upon civilians by New York City.

Contents

The medal is presented by the Mayor to those individuals who have demonstrated, "exceptional citizenship and outstanding achievement". The recipients come from a wide range of backgrounds, including ordinary citizens, foreign dignitaries, athletes, and film stars.

Description

The medallion is two and three quarter inches in diameter and was designed by Michael Lantz, best known for his 1938 sculpture in front of the Federal Trade Commission building in Washington, DC.

The district includes most of Manhattan's East Side, Astoria and Long Island City in Queens, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, as well as Roosevelt Island. A member of the Democratic Party, Maloney ran for reelection in 2022 but lost the primary to 10th district incumbent Jerry Nadler after redistricting drew them both into the 12th district.

He is on the 2007 edition of Time Magazine's "Time 100" Most Influential People in the World list, with a tribute written by Donald Trump.

Alonzo Hereford Cushing was an artillery officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was killed in action during the Battle of Gettysburg while defending the Union position on Cemetery Ridge against Pickett's Charge. In 2013, 150 years after Cushing's death, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. The nomination was approved by the United States Congress, and was sent for review by the Defense Department and the President.
