A Brookie is a hybrid desert that combines aspects and ingredients from cookies and brownies. The batter of a brownie and the dough of a cookie are usually made separately and then combined before baking. [1] This can either be done by layering the batter and dough [2] or by alternatingly scooping one after the other into the pan. [3]
Brookies are usually baked in square or rectangular pans, like brownies. This causes brookies to be similar in size and shape to brownies. [4] Brookies often have a fudgy or cakey texture, similar to brownies, while also having a chewy texture like cookies. [5] The brownie batter is often made with cocoa powder, sugar, eggs, flour and other ingredients. [6] The cookie dough may include flour, eggs, brown sugar, and other ingredients. [7] In addition, they may also be made with chocolate chips, rolled oats, [8] nuts, or dried fruits. Brookies are often served like brownies, and they may be served with multiple accompaniments. This includes but is not limited to milk, ice cream, fruit, coffee or whipped cream. [9]
The concept of a brownie and cookie hybrid comes from the mid 20th century. There are a lot of claims about who invented the brookie from around this time. The earliest documented mention of a desert similar to a brookie is believed to be from "The Joy of Cooking" by Irma S. Rombauer. [10]
Hybrid desserts like the Cronut (a croissant and doughnut hybrid) and the Cruffin (a croissant and muffin hybrid) became popular through social media in the early 2010s.
In 2014 Milk and Brookies was founded by Jovon English, Marques Brooks, Naimah Harris and Tisa Smart-Washington. Later, in 2015 Milk and Brookies would go onto season 7 Shark Tank seeking $100,000 for a fifth of the business. Milk and Brookies would have no offers from any of the sharks. [11]
