Brunei and Thailand have bilateral foreign relations. Brunei has an embassy in Bangkok, and Thailand has an embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan. [1] The relations have always been close and cordial. [2]

History

Two Royal Thai Navy ships, HTMS Phosampton and HTMS Maeklong visited Bandar Brunei in March 1971. [3]

Relations between the two countries have been established since 1984. [1] In 2012, the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah made a state visit to Thailand, while Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra attended the Royal Wedding of the daughter of Bolkiah, Princess Hajah Hafizah Sururul Bolkiah in the same year. [1]

Economic relations

Both countries cooperates in agriculture, energy, education and halal co-operation and Thailand are currently seeking to invest in Brunei's oil and gas sector and develop joint projects in renewable energy. [4] A memorandum of understanding also has been signed in agriculture co-operation, labour, avoidance of double taxation and anti-human trafficking. [5] Thailand were the main provider for rice stock in Brunei which comprises 95% of the Brunei's rice stock. [6] Beside that, Brunei also keen to learn rice production technology from Thailand. [7] In 2011, Brunei were among the ninth largest trading partners for Thailand with the total trade between the two countries reached U$269 million. [7] The major exports from Thailand include rice, cement, ceramics, rubber products, paper and pulp, while the imports from Brunei are mainly on iron and steel. [7]

Brunei, officially Brunei Darussalam, is a country in Southeast Asia, situated on the northern coast of the island of Borneo. Apart from its coastline on the South China Sea, it is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, with its territory bifurcated by the Sarawak district of Limbang. Brunei is the only sovereign state entirely on Borneo; the remainder of the island is divided between its multi-landmass neighbours of Malaysia and Indonesia. As of 2023, the country had a population of 455,858, of whom approximately 180,000 resided in the capital and largest city of Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei maintains diplomatic relations with 170 out of 193 countries, joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984, one week after resuming full independence, and gives its ASEAN membership the highest priority in its foreign relations. Brunei joined the United Nations in September 1984. It is also a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the Commonwealth of Nations. Brunei hosted the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November 2000. In 2005 it attended the inaugural East Asia Summit.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bandar Seri Begawan</span> Capital and largest city of Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital and largest city of Brunei. It is officially a municipal area with an area of 100.36 square kilometres (38.75 sq mi) and an estimated population of 100,700 as of 2007. It is part of Brunei-Muara District, the smallest yet most populous district which is home to over 70 per cent of the country's population. It is the country's largest urban centre and nominally the country's only city. The capital is home to Brunei's seat of government, as well as a commercial and cultural centre. It was formerly known as Brunei Town until it was renamed in 1970 in honour of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of the current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brunei–United States relations</span> Bilateral relations

Relations between Brunei and the United States date from the 19th century. On 6 April 1845, USS Constitution visited Brunei. The two countries concluded a Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 1850, which remains in force today. The United States maintained a consulate in Brunei from 1865 to 1867.

Since diplomatic relations were established back in 1984, relations between the two countries overall progressed well, and both sides continued to enjoy strong ties in a wide spectrum of co-operations; including trade and investment, tourism, agriculture, marine and fisheries, health, defence, transnational crimes, education, youth, culture and people-to-people contacts.

Brunei and the Philippines have formal diplomatic relations. Brunei has an embassy in Makati, Metro Manila while the Philippines has an embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Brunei and Myanmar established diplomatic relations in 1993. Brunei has an embassy in Yangon, and Myanmar has an embassy in Gadong. Both countries share friendly bilateral co-operation in education, health and labour.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Bandar Seri Begawan is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam. Since 1 July 2014, the chancery has been located at Simpang 336-43, Kebangsaan Street in Kampong Kawasan Diplomatik. Prior to this location, the embassy was located at Simpang 528, Lot 4498, Muara Street in Kampong Sungai Hanching Baru.
