Brussels' Comic Book Route (French : Parcours BD de Bruxelles; Dutch : Striproute van Brussel) is a path composed by several comic strip murals, which cover the walls of several buildings throughout the inner City of Brussels, as well as the neighbourhoods of Laeken and Auderghem. The large comic strip murals depict scenes from various popular Belgian comics, for instance The Adventures of Tintin , The Smurfs , Lucky Luke , Gaston , and Marsupilami .
The project began in 1991 as an initiative of the local authorities of the City of Brussels in collaboration with the Belgian Comic Strip Center. Initially, the project only intended to embellish empty walls and gables of buildings in the city. It then became an opportunity to celebrate the rich comic book heritage of Brussels, which claims to be the capital of the "comic strip". [1]
Nowadays, the Brussels' Comic Book Route offers more than 50 mural paintings, most of them located inside the Pentagon (as the city centre is often called due to its geometrical shape). Following its trail, the Comic Book Route is a good way to discover the capital and even penetrate some neighbourhoods less crowded by tourists. The Brussels tourist association Pro Velo organises a two-hour bike tour starting at the Bicycle Riders House (Maison des cyclistes).
Broussaille was the first comic book wall to be painted, [2] based on an original project of the comic book artist Frank Pé. With its surface of about 35 m2 (380 sq ft), the mural painting was inaugurated in July 1991 at the intersection between the Rue du Marché au Charbon/Kolenmarkt and the Rue des Teinturiers/Verversstraat. As with most of the mural paintings, the association Art Mural was in charge of the execution of the work.
Art Mural is an association created by five artists in 1984, mainly aimed to realise mural painting in public areas. Since 1993, it has been devoted to the creation and realisation of new murals for Brussels' Comic Book Route, with a rhythm of two to three new works per year. [3] Georgios Oreopoulos and David Vandegeerde are the only two remaining founder members of the association, having been involved in all the projects and murals, helped with a large number of other artists who have collaborated and worked with them.

Paul Delvaux was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, but developed his own fantastical subjects and hyper-realistic styling, combining the detailed classical beauty of academic painting with the bizarre juxtapositions of surrealism.
Edgard Félix Pierre Jacobs, better known under his pen name Edgar P. Jacobs, was a Belgian comic book creator, born in Brussels, Belgium. He was one of the founding fathers of the Franco-Belgian comics movement, through his collaborations with Hergé and the graphic novel series that made him famous, Blake and Mortimer.

The Bortier Gallery is a glazed shopping arcade in central Brussels, Belgium. It was designed by Jean-Pierre Cluysenaer in 1847, in a neo-Renaissance style, and opened in the following year. The Smurfs is a Belgian comic series, created by cartoonist Peyo. The titular creatures were introduced as supporting characters in an already established series, Johan and Peewit in 1958, and starred in their own series from 1959. More than forty Smurf comic albums have been created, 16 of them by Peyo. Originally, the Smurf stories appeared in Spirou magazine with reprints in many different magazines, but after Peyo left the publisher Dupuis, many comics were first published in dedicated Smurf magazines, which existed in French, Dutch and German. A number of short stories and one page gags have been collected in comic books next to the regular series. By 2008, Smurf comics have been translated into 25 languages, and some 25 million albums have been sold.

His colourful illustrations and painterly backgrounds create a dreamy and imaginative atmosphere. Evens uses dynamic lines and flowing shapes to bring his characters and landscapes to life. His figures often have abstract and distorted features, conveying a sense of movement and emotion. Overall, his work has an unconventional and experimental aesthetic that bears his own unique stamp; Evensism.
