Bruthen railway station was opened on 10 April 1916, as part of the Orbost railway line. The station officially closed on 24 August 1987. [1]

The former platform remains evident at the station site, with the site remaining as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line. The station itself is slightly to the West of the town of Bruthen. In town, the railway alignment and rail trail pass through a short tunnel below the main street, and then skirt around the southern edge of Bruthen, crossing the large Storer Bridge, and over the Tambo River, which is now sealed with boards as the rail trail surface. It was dis-established as a staff station on 25 July 1986, with the staff and ticket sections Bairnsdale - Bruthen, Bruthen - Nowa Nowa, and Nowa Nowa - Orbost abolished, and replaced with a single staff and ticket section; Bairnsdale - Orbost. [4]

Orbost is a historic early settlers town in the Shire of East Gippsland, Victoria, 375 kilometres (233 mi) east of Melbourne and 235 kilometres (146 mi) south of Canberra where the Princes Highway crosses the Snowy River. The East Gippsland Rail Trail is a rail trail located in East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. The trail is a popular cycling route, beginning in Bairnsdale and extending to Orbost, following the route of the former Gippsland railway line. The Gippsland railway line was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry, and required numerous substantial bridges because of the nature of the terrain. Due to the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August 1987 and the track infrastructure removed in 1994. The shared trail is also available for walkers and recreational horseriding, however motorised vehicles are prohibited.

Nicholson railway station was opened on 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line and closed on 24 August 1987.
