Nowa Nowa railway station was located on the Orbost railway line. It opened on 10 April 1916 to serve the small town of the same name and was closed with the line in August 1987. [1]

Nowa Nowa was disestablished as a staff station on 25 July 1986. The staff and ticket sections Bairnsdale - Bruthen, Bruthen - Nowa Nowa and Nowa Nowa - Orbost were abolished and replaced with a single staff and ticket section: Bairnsdale - Orbost. [2]

The East Gippsland Rail Trail mostly follows the route of the former rail line. The station site, just north of the rail trail, is now an emergency helicopter landing place. [3]

Orbost is a historic early settlers town in the Shire of East Gippsland, Victoria, 375 kilometres (233 mi) east of Melbourne and 235 kilometres (146 mi) south of Canberra where the Princes Highway crosses the Snowy River. It is about 16 kilometres (10 mi) from the surf and fishing seaside town of Marlo on the coast of Bass Strait and 217 km (135 mi) drive to Hotham Alpine Resort. Orbost is the service centre for the primary industries of beef, dairy cattle and sawmilling. More recently, tourism has become an important and thriving industry, being the major town close to several national parks that are between the east access to either the surf or the snow, including the famous Snowy River National Park, Alpine National Park, Errinundra National Park, Croajingolong National Park and Cape Conran Coastal Park.

The East Gippsland Rail Trail is a rail trail located in East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. The trail is a popular cycling route, beginning in Bairnsdale and extending to Orbost, following the route of the former Gippsland railway line. The Gippsland railway line was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry, and required numerous substantial bridges because of the nature of the terrain. Due to the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August 1987 and the track infrastructure removed in 1994. The shared trail is also available for walkers and recreational horseriding, however motorised vehicles are prohibited.
