In 2015, The Spirits Business presented Davis with the Global Master award for innovation. [6]

As of 2016, the Davis method of aging spirits is only used by a handful of producers. However, it has been widely speculated that Davis' invention may ultimately revolutionize the spirits industry. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

Products made using Davis' technology have been named the "best spirits of 2015" by Serious Eats, and "best spirits of 2014" by liquor.com. [12] [13] Rum made using the technology won "best in class" at the Miami Rum Renaissance blind judging in 2014. [14] Additionally, his company, was nominated for Craft Distillery of the Year in 2014 by Whisky Magazine. [15]

Education

Bryan Davis is a notable autodidact. [16] He has a Bachelor of fine Arts degree from The San Francisco Art Institute, yet was able to master organic chemistry sufficiently well to make a breakthrough in the industry, primarily reading pubmed and Wikipedia. [17] [18]

Career

Davis was the co-founder and distiller of Obsello Absinthe, and Port of Dragons gin before founding Lost Spirits in 2010. [19] [20] [21] [22]

Canadian whisky is a type of whisky produced in Canada. Most Canadian whiskies are blended multi-grain liquors containing a large percentage of corn spirits, and are typically lighter and smoother than other whisky styles. When Canadian distillers began adding small amounts of highly-flavourful rye grain to their mashes, people began demanding this new rye-flavoured whisky, referring to it simply as "rye". Today, as for the past two centuries, the terms "rye whisky" and "Canadian whisky" are used interchangeably in Canada and refer to exactly the same product, which generally is made with only a small amount of rye grain.

A master blender is an individual who develops specific blended spirits using a combination of spirits with different characteristics. For example, in the Scotch whisky industry, master blenders choose which single malts and grain whiskies to combine to make particular brands of blended whisky. A master blender is not the same thing as a master distiller, although one person may do both jobs at small craft distilleries. As the name suggests, the blender creates blends using spirits from different casks and is responsible for making sure the product remains consistent across different batches, while the distiller is either directly responsible for the mashing and distilling of spirits or simply holds the title as the administrative and marketing figurehead of the company.

A microdistillery is a small, often boutique-style distillery established to produce beverage grade spirit alcohol in relatively small quantities, usually done in single batches. The more recent development of micro-distilleries can now also be seen in locations as diverse as London, Switzerland and South Africa.

The title doesn't have a fixed definition and can mean different things at different companies. Although the craft of distilling has existed for centuries throughout history, the term "master distiller" only dates back as far as the 1800s when it was first used to acknowledge the distilling expertise and knowledge a person gained after practicing and perfecting the craft of distilling for many years. In more recent usage, the term can have a much broader meaning and is sometimes used for owners and company leaders who run their companies but do not actively create the distilling recipes and processes used at their distilleries.
