Lost Spirits was a working distillery and immersive circus show located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was founded by Bryan Davis and Joanne Haruta. [1] [2]

Contents

The distillery was initially located in Salinas, California, where it opened in 2010. [3]

Lost Spirits closed at the end of April 2024. [4]

Technology

In 2015, the distillery attracted attention after Davis developed technology to create mature whisky and rum within days. [5] [1]

Davis's process was shown, using modern analytical chemistry, to replicate the chemical reactions which take place as spirits age in barrels. [6] [1] The process aims to replicate the aging process in a laboratory while producing the same chemical signature and taste. [5]

Whisky made using Davis' process performed favorably in blind tastings hosted by Whisky Advocate, [7] and won a Liquid Gold award in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible (widely considered the world's most influential whisky critic). [8] [9]

In 2016, the distillery was moved to downtown Los Angeles, California. [10]

Circus

In 2021, Davis and Haruta moved the distillery to Las Vegas. [1] The new location included a tour described as "equated to an adult Disneyland." [11] [12] The Las Vegas version featured a large cast of live actors, acrobats, contortionists and singers. [13] The experience of visiting Lost Spirits has been described as "cult hit among spirits geeks". [14]

In 2023 Lost Spirits was listed on the annual Thrillist list of the best live shows & musicals in Las Vegas. [15]

Canadian whisky is a type of whisky produced in Canada. Most Canadian whiskies are blended multi-grain liquors containing a large percentage of corn spirits, and are typically lighter and smoother than other whisky styles. When Canadian distillers began adding small amounts of highly-flavourful rye grain to their mashes, people began demanding this new rye-flavoured whisky, referring to it simply as "rye". Today, as for the past two centuries, the terms "rye whisky" and "Canadian whisky" are used interchangeably in Canada and refer to exactly the same product, which generally is made with only a small amount of rye grain.

Whisky or whiskey is a type of liquor made from fermented grain mash. Various grains are used for different varieties, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. A master blender is an individual who develops specific blended spirits using a combination of spirits with different characteristics. For example, in the Scotch whisky industry, master blenders choose which single malts and grain whiskies to combine to make particular brands of blended whisky. A master blender is not the same thing as a master distiller, although one person may do both jobs at small craft distilleries. As the name suggests, the blender creates blends using spirits from different casks and is responsible for making sure the product remains consistent across different batches, while the distiller is either directly responsible for the mashing and distilling of spirits or simply holds the title as the administrative and marketing figurehead of the company.

Master distiller is a title often used for a distilling expert or a key leader or owner at modern distilleries. The title doesn't have a fixed definition and can mean different things at different companies. Although the craft of distilling has existed for centuries throughout history, the term "master distiller" only dates back as far as the 1800s when it was first used to acknowledge the distilling expertise and knowledge a person gained after practicing and perfecting the craft of distilling for many years. In more recent usage, the term can have a much broader meaning and is sometimes used for owners and company leaders who run their companies but do not actively create the distilling recipes and processes used at their distilleries.
