Buh Records is a record label from Lima, Peru. It was founded by Luis Alvarado in 2004. [1]

Buh is Spanish transliteration of the word “boo”. The label began after Luis Alvarado was writing about experimental music in Peru, and decided someone needed to reissue many of the out-of-print or largely unavailable releases. [2]

They have released music in genres as diverse as dream pop, post-punk and free improvisation. Most of their artists are based in Peru, but they have also released music by USA based Amma Ateria and Nava Dunkelman, a compilation of underground electronic music from Switzerland, [3] [4] and work by Colombian composer Jacqueline Nova and Venezuelan Oksana Linde. [5] [2] [6]

Alvarado has said his aim for Buh Records is to present Peru's past and present to better tell the story of South American sound experimentation and the avant-garde. [7] They have also hosted a Buh Records Festival, featuring audiovisual presentations and a homage to Walter Smetak. [8] [9]

The label has received funding from Peru's ministry of culture, such as for 2021's El fabuloso sonido de Andrés Vargas Pinedo: una colección de música popular amazónica (1966-1974), a compilation featuring the work of flautist Andrés Vargas Pinedo. [10] [11]

Their first releases were distributed on CD-R, but later moved to vinyl, cassette tape, and CD. [12]

The Wire magazine has highlighted their work often, and was featured across four pages in their October 2018 issue. [13]

In the arts and in literature, the term avant-garde identifies a genre of art, an experimental work of art, and the experimental artist who created the work of art, which usually is aesthetically innovative, whilst initially being ideologically unacceptable to the artistic establishment of the time. The military metaphor of an advance guard identifies the artists and writers whose innovations in style, form, and subject-matter challenge the artistic and aesthetic validity of the established forms of art and the literary traditions of their time; thus how the artists who created the anti-novel and Surrealism were ahead of their times.

While the Peruvian film industry has not been nearly as prolific as that of some other Latin American countries, such as Mexico or Argentina, some Peruvian movies produced enjoyed regional success. Post-punk is a broad genre of music that emerged in 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and do it yourself ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines.
