Bukit Timah Race Course

The Bukit Timah Race Course was a venue for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Bukit Timah area of Singapore. Built by the Bukit Timah Turf Club, it was opened on 15 April 1933 by the Sathyawathy Governor of Singapore.^[1] There was no racing from 1941 through 1946 as a result of World War II.

During its sixty-six years, Bukit Timah Race Course was visited by numerous Singapore and foreign dignitaries including a 1972 visit by racing fan and Thoroughbred owner, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Princess Anne. In honor of her visit, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup was established.

In 1959 the Singapore Derby was revived at Bukit Timah Race Course and was the feature race on its final day of operation on 25 July 1999. It was closed to make way for Kranji Racecourse.

Turf City

Turf City was opened in 1999 with a 10-year lease until 2010. Its first tenant was Singapore Agro Agricultural (SAA). Singapore Land Authority wanted this tenant to extend its lease until 1 March 2012. By this time, SH Cogent (Cogent Land Capital) took over the Turf City portion and several shops had been closed and demolished. Turf City was renamed 'The Grandstand' and opened after upgrading in July 2012.^[2]

As connectivity was poor until 2015, shuttle buses were originally provided from Toa Payoh or Clementi. After that, connections were provided from Botanic Gardens or Sixth Avenue. The Bukit Timah Race Course area was shut down in 2023 to make way for future development, including the MRT station at the former Turf City and a mix of public and private homes.^[3]

The Singapore Derby is a thoroughbred horse race held annually in mid-July at the Singapore Turf Club. Contested on turf over a left-handed course, the domestic Group 1 race is run over a 1,800-metre distance and is open to four-year-old horses only.

The Raffles Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore. Contested on turf over a left-handed course, the domestic Group One race is open to horses age three and older.

The Singapore Gold Cup is a thoroughbred horse race held annually in November at Singapore Turf Club. Contested on turf over a left-handed course, the domestic Group 1 race is run over a distance of 2,000 metres and is open to local horses age three and older.

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) is a horse racing organisation which was founded in 1847 in Calcutta, British India. Horse events and sports were initially organised for the British cavalry at Akra before they were moved to the Maidan. The RCTC became the foremost horse-racing organization in India during the British Raj. At one time it was the governing body for nearly all racecourses in the subcontinent, defining and applying the rules governing the sport. During its heyday, RCTC-organised races were among the most important social events of the bigwigs' calendar and were opened by the Viceroy of India. Turf City MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Cross Island line (CRL) located in Bukit Timah, Singapore. First announced in September 2022, the station is expected to be completed in 2032 along with the other CRL Phase 2 stations.

The Singapore Turf Club was founded in 1842 as the Singapore Sporting Club to operate the Serangoon Road Race Course at Farrer Park Field. It was the only horse-racing club in Singapore and is part of the Malayan Racing Association. The first race was held on 23 February 1843 with a prize money of $150. The club closed in 1988 after the Singapore Totaliser Board formed the Bukit Turf Club (BTC) to take over all racing activities.

The Former Bukit Timah Fire Station, also known as the Old Bukit Timah Fire Station or the Bukit Timah Fire Station, is a former fire station located at Upper Bukit Timah Road, Singapore. It is planned to be redesigned into a community centre for nature. It is nearby the upcoming Hume MRT station. Bukit Timah Fire Station is also located nearby other heritage sites such as the Former Ford Factory, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, and the Bukit Timah Memorial.
