Although there is debate as to how much, if any, contribution Hauptmann might have made to the text, Brecht is usually listed as sole author.

On June 3, 2018, Kellogg won the 2018 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics for Desperate Measures.

In December 2018, Whitney was nominated at the 61st Grammy Awards for Best Music Film.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. wrote the foreword, while Chuck D and Common wrote the afterwords.
