Burnt Toast Vinyl is an independent record label based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

History

Burnt Toast Vinyl was founded by Scott Hatch, [1] a Drexel University student who had initially been involved with concert promotion at the school. [2] The label has released full albums from several prominent Philadelphia indie musicians, as well as releasing or re-releasing material on vinyl from artists, including those on the Tooth & Nail roster. Among its reissues are the debut album from Scaterd Few, re-released by Burnt Toast in 2015. [3]

Several of Burnt Toast's post rock and experimental groups attracted notice from magazines such as Dusted [4] and Prefix. [5] Among the label's best-known releases are those by Denison Witmer, [6] [7] [8] Unwed Sailor, [9] [10] [11] [12] and Saxon Shore. [13] [14]

However, contrary to many sources, the band considers this a compilation album, being a collection of songs recorded at different times. Petitioning the Empty Sky was released and distributed through several different labels beginning in the mid 90s.

Denison Witmer is an American singer-songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States. His first release, in 1995, was a cassette titled My Luck, My Love. He has since released six studio LPs; two live albums, a cover album (Recovered); three EPs; and an LP with The River Bends—a side project consisting of members of the Philadelphia-based alt-country band One Star Hotel. Witmer's 2005 album, Are You a Dreamer?, produced by Don Peris of The Innocence Mission and featuring Sufjan Stevens, received acclaim, including positive reviews from Pitchfork Media and Entertainment Weekly. Witmer and Stevens appeared on Rosie Thomas's 2007 album These Friends of Mine, an album which included Rosie Thomas' version of Paper Doll, a track originally written and recorded by Witmer. The Marionette and the Music Box is a 2003 concept album by the instrumental rock group Unwed Sailor. The album consists of 17 instrumental tracks, each of which coincide with a painting by graphic artist Jamie Hunt in the included booklet. The paintings and song titles tell the story of a marionette who journeys out of his cottage and discovers a music box. The pages following their initial meeting go on to detail the entrance of a mysterious unicorn, the marionette's subsequent "enchantment," his "hopeless pursuit" of the unicorn, and eventually his return to the open arms of the music box.
