Burton upon Trent Infirmary was a health facility in Duke Street, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England.
The facility, which was designed by architect Edward Holmes, opened in October 1869. [1] The infirmary's first President was the Marquess of Anglesey who also had been the previous owner of the site. [1] It was expanded to a design by Aston Webb in 1899 in such a way that the building extended right back to New Street. [2] Following further expansion in 1924, 1931 and 1942, [3] it joined the National Health Service in 1948. [4] After services had been transferred to Queen's Hospital, the ageing infirmary closed in 1993; the buildings were demolished in 1994 and the site was redeveloped for residential use. [3]
Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a market town in Staffordshire, England, close to the border with Derbyshire. In 2011, it had a population of 72,299. The demonym for residents of the town is Burtonian. Burton is 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Derby, 27 miles (43 km) northwest of Leicester, 28 miles (45 km) west-southwest of Nottingham and 20 miles (32 km) south of the southern entrance to the Peak District National Park.

Castle Gresley is 2 miles (3 km) to the south-west and Albert Village 1.5 miles (2 km) to the south.

The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, or RIE, often known as the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, or ERI, was established in 1729 and is the oldest voluntary hospital in Scotland. The new buildings of 1879 were claimed to be the largest voluntary hospital in the United Kingdom, and later on, the Empire. The hospital moved to a new 900 bed site in 2003 in Little France. It is the site of clinical medicine teaching as well as a teaching hospital for the University of Edinburgh Medical School. In 1960, the first successful kidney transplant performed in the UK was at this hospital. In 1964, the world's first coronary care unit was established at the hospital. It is the only site for liver, pancreas and pancreatic islet cell transplantation and one of two sites for kidney transplantation in Scotland. In 2012 the Emergency Department had 113,000 patient attendances, the highest number in Scotland. It is managed by NHS Lothian.

It was originally located in premises in Albert Street Dundee, but later moved out of the town to new buildings in the nearby parish of Liff and Benvie. Buildings at Liff included Greystanes House, which was the main building, and, Gowrie House, which was the private patients' facility. Both Grade B listed buildings.
