C. Moore Hardy (born 1955), is an Australian photographer, nurse and community worker, known for her extensive photographic documentation of the Sydney queer community since the late 1970s. [1] Hardy's work has encompassed both freelance and commercial photography, featuring candid portraiture of community events, most notably the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and in particular minority groups within the LGBTI community. [2] She successfully ran Starfish Studio Photography Studio/Gallery in Clovelly, NSW for 15 years. Hardy held a major exhibition of over three decades of her documentation of Sydney's LGBTQ+ scene at the National Art School in Sydney.
Hardy was born in Darlinghurst in 1955, [3] to a Lebanese father and an Irish Pharmacist mother. As a child she was given a Brownie camera by her father as a gift. [4] Raised in a Catholic family and going to Brigidine College Randwick, High school for girls, [5] informed her social conscience. After studying nursing at Prince of Wales/Prince Henry Hospitals, Hardy worked part time until she set up her photographic studio (Starfish Studio) in Clovelly. She completed art school studies at National Art School, Darlinghurst: College Of Fine Arts, Paddington: & Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, before setting up Starfish Studio. [6] studying at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney (1986-?), Hardy also studied Arts Management at UTS Ultimo, as a post graduate subject, but to make ends meet she continued nursing until setting up Starfish Studio.
Hardy's involvement in a broad range of social causes from the late 1970s, saw her start to photograph those movements, she later noted:
“I was involved in all kinds of politics from those days – women’s rights, animal rights, anti-nuclear, conservation, our natural heritage, gay and lesbian rights. I care deeply about the society I live in.” [7]
In July 1979 Hardy's work was featured on the cover of the first edition of the gay and lesbian community newspaper the Star Observer. [8] Working for the Star Observer Hardy became increasingly involved in the gay and lesbian community, and from the mid-1980s this significantly expanded with the increasing popularity and expansion of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which became a key focus of her work documenting in the community. She was also increasingly drawn to minorities within the LGBTI community – trans* people, Indigenous community members and lesbians – who weren't being as avidly captured by other documentary photographers as gay men.
From the 1980s to the 2010s Hardy has combined her community and professional photographic practice with her work as a Registered Nurse and Clinical Coordinator, including roles at the (Prince of Wales Hospital (Sydney), Prince Henry Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and St Vincent's Hospital. [9] Her community photographic practice extended to voluntary cultural development positions for lesbian and gay community groups, including the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, Sydney Pride Centre, AIDS Council of New South Wales (ACON) and the Sydney Gay Games Bid.
In 1994, Hardy, along with partner Martien Coucke produced the ‘1994 Lesbian Calendar’, (with an accompanying set of 8 postcards) featuring portraits from the calendar.

Hardy's work is held in many institutions, most notably the Australian Queer Archives, who hold over 5000 works, the City of Sydney Archives, who hold 4,120+ images; [25] as well as the National Library of Australia, [26] Griffith University Art Museum, [27] and State Library of New South Wales. The Australian Queer Archives (AQuA) is a community-based non-profit organisation committed to the collection, preservation and celebration of material reflecting the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex LGBTI Australians. It is located in Melbourne. The Archives was established as an initiative of the 4th National Homosexual Conference, Sydney, August 1978, drawing on the previous work of founding President Graham Carbery. Since its establishment the collection has grown to over 200,000 items, constituting the largest and most significant collection of material relating to LGBT Australians and the largest collection of LGBT material in Australia, and the most prominent research centre for gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex history in Australia.
The Mardi Gras Film Festival is an Australian LGBTQ+ film festival held in Sydney, New South Wales annually as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrations. It is organised by Queer Screen Limited, a non-profit organization, and is one of the world's largest platforms for queer cinema.
David McDiarmid (1952–1995) was an artist, designer and political activist, recognised for his prominent and sustained artistic engagement in issues relating to gay male identity and HIV/AIDS. He is also known for his involvement in the gay liberation movement of the early 1970s, when he was the first person arrested at a gay rights protest in Australia, as well as his artistic direction of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. From its inception, McDiarmid's art career encompassed, as both subject and inspiration, gay male sexuality, politics and urban subcultures. His creative techniques included: collage, painting, drawing, calligraphy, mosaic, installation, various forms of print-making, sculpture and artist's books. He was a graphic designer, designer and fabric painter for women's and men's fashion, and an artist and creative director for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras street parades.
Peter Tully (1947-1992), was a jeweller, designer and artistic director, notable for his influence on jewellery design in Australia through the utilisation of found and non-precious materials, as well as his artistic direction of the Sydney Mardi Gras (1982-1986).
Sandra Edwards is an Australian photographer. Edwards specialises in documentary photography and photographic curation. Born in Bluff, New Zealand in 1948 Edwards arrived in Sydney in 1961. Edwards was at the forefront of a group of progressive photographers in the 1970s and 80s who were driven to create documentary work that recorded social conditions and had the intent to change these conditions. Edwards' work largely drew from feminist ideals and the media's representation of women as well as the portrayal of Aboriginal communities in Australia.

Sydney's Pride History Group was established as the first volunteer community group dedicated exclusively to preserving the history of LGBTIQ Sydney predominantly through the collection of oral history interviews. The Group's origins date from discussions held at the Sydney Pride Centre in between 2003 and 2004. The Group's Patrons are Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, artist William Yang and Meredith Burgmann.

The 78ers are a group of LGBT activists who marched in the original Sydney Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978 and participated in the subsequent protests against police violence and the arrests of participants in the Mardi Gras. In 1997 a small group of people who were part of the 1978 events contributed to planning the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Mardi Gras parade in 1998. This group became known as the 78ers and has led each year's Mardi Gras parade since 1998.

With a long history of LGBT rights activism and the annual three-week-long Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, Sydney is one of the most gay-friendly cities in Australia and in the world.
William Yang is an acclaimed social history photographer, playwright, artist and filmmaker living in Australia. Born in Dimbulah, North Queensland he is a third generation Chinese Australian. Yang's photography and performances span over 50 years and document the uncharted growth and influence of Sydney's gay subculture from the 1970s through to the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s and beyond. Through the media of photography and performance Yang also explores his own ethnicity as a Chinese Australian and the intersection of his ethnic background and sexuality.
