History

Founded in 1934, Isla Cristina played in the regional leagues until 1994, when they achieved promotion to Tercera División. In the 1997 play-offs, the club achieved a first-ever promotion to Segunda División B after leading their group. [1]

After an impressive ninth position in the 1997–98 season (which included a 4–4 aggregate victory on away goals over La Liga side Sevilla FC in the 1997–98 Copa del Rey), [1] the club had a disastrous 1998–99 campaign, which ended with just four points in 38 rounds, [2] and a record number of seven managers during the entire season; the record of managers was only surpassed by CD Eldense in 2017. [3]

Shortly after Isla Cristina's relegation, the club folded, and a new club called Isla Cristina FC was founded shortly after. [1]

The 2021 Tercera División play-offs to Segunda División RFEF from Tercera División were the final play-offs for the promotion from 2020–21 Tercera División to 2021–22 Segunda División RFEF. The last four teams from the promotion groups and the top two clubs from the Play-off groups qualified for this stage.

The 2021–22 Segunda División RFEF season was the first for the Segunda División RFEF, the new fourth highest level in the Spanish football league system. It supplanted Tercera División, which downgraded to the fifth tier as Tercera División RFEF and succeeded the old Segunda División B, which was replaced by Primera División RFEF as the third level of the pyramid. Ninety teams will participate, divided into five groups of eighteen clubs each based on geographical proximity. In each group, the champions automatically promoted to Primera División RFEF, and the second to fifth placers will play promotion play-offs. The last five teams in each group will be relegated to the Tercera División RFEF; in addition, the four worst teams classified 13th in their group will play play-offs to define the last two relegation places.
