Contents

It is one of the eleven schools founded by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus (CHIJ) in Singapore and also traces its roots to Katong Convent, established in 1930 with 197 pupils.

History

The Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) was founded by four Catholic nuns in 1854. [1]

Katong Convent began as a private English primary school in 1930.[ citation needed ] To meet rising demand, a branch – CHIJ Opera Estate – was established in 1959. In 1990, this branch was relocated and merged with the primary section of Katong Convent at Marine Terrace, becoming CHIJ (Katong) Primary. [2] The school was blessed on 16 November 1990, and officially opened in 1991.[ citation needed ]

In 2007, the school was rebuilt under the PRIME (Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing schools) initiative. The upgraded building was officially opened in 2009. [3]

CHIJ (Katong) Primary marked its 95th anniversary in 2025, commemorating decades of growth and service. Celebrations featured symbolic performances and special events such as the "95 Acts of Service" and a Thanksgiving Celebration on 17 November. [4]

Popularity

Homes in the District 15 area of East Coast and Marine Parade are highly sought after by young families due to their proximity to CHIJ Katong Primary. [5]
