CS Politehnica Iași is a professional basketball club, based in Iași, Romania. The club competes in the Liga Națională.
Iași is the second largest city in Romania, and the seat of Iași County. Located in the historical region of Moldavia, Iași has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life. The city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, then of the United Principalities from 1859 to 1862, and the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918.
Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It borders the Black Sea to the southeast, Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, and Moldova to the east. It has a predominantly temperate-continental climate. With a total area of 238,397 square kilometres (92,046 sq mi), Romania is the 12th largest country and also the 7th most populous member state of the European Union, having almost 20 million inhabitants. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, and other major urban areas include Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Craiova, and Brașov.
The Liga Națională is the top-tier professional basketball league of Romania. Founded in 1950, the winner of the league is crowned the Romanian national champion. Currently, the league exists of 24 teams playing in three different divisions. The most successful club in the league's history is Dinamo Bucureşti, which has won a record 22 titles. Teams from the Liga Națională also participate in European competitions, as they can qualify for the Basketball Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup through their season results.
The club was founded in 1967 and the best performance of the white and blues was in the 1997-1998 season when they won the bronze medal in the Liga Națională. The team relegated at the end of the 2010-2011 season in the second league.
In the season 2016-2017 the team finally qualified for the Liga I final four, and in the final they managed to get the second place, which guaranteed their access to the 2017–18 Liga Națională. [1]
The Liga I was the second level of professional basketball in Romania. There were 25 teams, divided in 4 groups in Liga I. The competition was dissolved at the start of the 2018–19 season, when the Romanian Basketball System was reformed and Liga Națională remained the only senior level competition.
The 2017–18 Liga Națională season was the 68th season of the Liga Națională, the highest professional basketball league in Romania. U-BT Cluj-Napoca were the defending champion.

Since Politehnica Iași have faced financial issues, they will relegate to Divizia Națională de Seniori which means that both ACS Tomitanii Constanța and CSM Gloria Buzău will replace them next season. Also Timișoara Saracens, the winners of the CEC Bank SuperLiga will participate in the European Rugby Continental Shield.
