Camp Blizzard

Camp Blizzard is the headquarters of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. The camp is located in the village of Osbourn, Saint George Parish; located nearby to Shoal Point, the American University of Antigua, and the V. C. Bird International Airport. Camp Blizzard was formerly a U.S. naval base until 1995. [1] [2]

Camp Blizzard has an immigration detention centre [3] and a reverse osmosis plant. [4] The base houses the 1st Regiment, the Service and Support Unit, Cadet Corps, and the Air Wing. [2] Other facilities include the Force Medic Station and the Construction and Engineering Department. [2]

The Antiguan Carnival is a celebration of emancipation from slavery, held annually on the island of Antigua. It is a thirteen-day festival of colorful costumes, beauty pageants, talent shows, and music. The festival begins in late July and ends the first Tuesday in August, known as Carnival Tuesday. Both Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday are public holidays on the island. Antiguan Carnival replaced the Old Time Christmas Festival in 1957, with hopes of inspiring tourism in Antigua and Barbuda. Some elements of the Old Time Christmas Festival remain in the modern Carnival celebrations.

General elections were held in Antigua and Barbuda on 18 January 2023 to elect members of the House of Representatives. The Labour Party (ABLP) has held an absolute majority of 15 seats in the House of Representatives after the 2018 general election, with Gaston Browne remaining as prime minister. Browne initiated a constitutional referendum after the 2018 election, which was rejected by voters, and following the death of Elizabeth II in 2022, he announced his intention to organise a referendum for the transition of Antigua and Barbuda to a republican system. Besides ABLP, the United Progressive Party (UPP), Democratic National Alliance, Barbuda People's Movement (BPM), and three independent politicians filed candidacies for the 2023 general election.

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Air Wing is an aerial component of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. The Air Wing's mission includes troop transport, medical evacuation, disaster response and search and rescue. The unit was commissioned on 12 April 2022 and started operations with one aircraft, a second airframe entered service in September 2023. Since then, it has expressed interest in acquiring a helicopter, and additional aircraft. Currently they are based in the Calvin Air hangar at V.C. Bird International Airport, but are scheduled relocate to a more suitable hangar.
